Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (Several Posts) in Mathematical and Computational Sciences Hong Kong Baptist University, Faculty of Science

FACULTY OF SCIENCE

The Faculty of Science comprises five departments, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics. Building on the existing research strength and expertise in analytical chemistry, quantitative biology, and environmental and data science, the Faculty has identified Environment and Health, a highly interdisciplinary theme research area across the departments, as a Faculty Niche Research Area, and aims to establish world-class research teams and facilities for tackling key questions relating to human health and environmental impacts. Major resources will be allocated to this Faculty Niche Research Area, to develop the needed experimental platforms as well as modelling and data analysis capabilities. The ultimate goal is to uncover mechanistic links between various environmental factors and human diseases, leading to new strategies of disease prevention, diagnostics and treatment.

Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (Several Posts)

The Faculty of Science now invites applications for several tenure-track faculty positions at the Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor ranks, to work on this prioritised research area, commencing from 1 September 2017, or soon thereafter. Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of three years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.

The appointees are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations within the Faculty. Applicants should possess a relevant PhD degree, and demonstrate research accomplishments of originality and depth with the potential to be an international scientific leader in the following areas:

Analytical Sciences for Human Health and Environments (PR321/16-17)

· Mechanistic understanding and disease models related to environmental pollution-caused human diseases. Specific experimental expertise may include: modern analytical chemistry on environmental and health research, protein and cellular structures and dynamics, responses of living organisms to environmental factors, immunology, animal and cell models, and synthetic biology.

· Data modelling and analysis, in particular large-scale omics data to identify mechanistic targets.

Mathematical and Computational Sciences (PR322/16-17)

· Mathematical and computational techniques, such as data analytics, data assimilation and integration, mathematical and statistical modeling, large-scale computing and visualisation, health informatics, artificial intelligence, big data, machine learning, security and privacy, and cloud computing.

Enquiries about the posts in Analytical Sciences for Human Health and Environments should be sent to Dr K.K. Shiu (e-mail: chem@hkbu.edu.hk), and about the posts in Mathematical and Computational Sciences should be sent to Prof Michael K.P. Ng (e-mail: mathdept@hkbu.edu.hk).

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Application Procedure:

Applicants are invited to write in response to the requirements and provide an updated curriculum vitae and/or fill in the application form which is obtainable (a) by downloading from http://pers.hkbu.edu.hk/applicationforms; or (b) by fax at 3411-7799; or (c) in person from the Personnel Office, Hong Kong Baptist University, AAB903, Level 9, Academic and Administration Building, 15 Baptist University Road, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon. The completed application form should be sent to the same address. Please quote PR number on all correspondence. Applicants are invited to send a covering letter indicating which research areas they intend to align with and setting out how they would contribute to at least two of the research areas. Please indicate clearly which rank they wish to be considered for. Applicants are requested to send in samples of publications, preferably three best ones out of their most recent publications/works, statements of teaching and research interest and recent teaching evaluation results. Applicants should also request two referees to send in confidential letters of reference to the Personnel Office direct. Applicants not invited for interview 4 months after the closing date may consider their applications unsuccessful. All application materials including publication samples, scholarly/creative works will not be returned after the completion of the recruitment exercise unless upon request.
