The Thule Institute at the University of Oulu, Finland, is announcing a

Postdoctoral Researcher

position to work in and support the University of the Arctic Research Area and UArctic Thematic Networks activities.

 

UArctic (University of the Arctic, uarctic.org) is a cooperative network of over 170 universities, colleges, research institutes and other organizations concerned with education and research in and about the North. UArctic's Research Area is led by the UArctic Vice-President Research located at the Thule Institute at the University of Oulu. The following units are working for UArctic research area:

 

  • UArctic Thematic Networks and Research Liaison Office (Thule Institute at the University of Oulu, Finland) supporting the Thematic Networks, which link educational, research and outreach activities. Thematic Networks are led by the Thematic Networks Director who also locates at the Thule Institute.
  • UArctic Research Office (Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Russia) provides information resources to support the development of research activities especially in Russia.

 

Postdoctoral Researcher will work closely with V-P Research and Thematic Networks Director as well with the other UArctic offices, particularly with International Secretary located at the University of Lapland and the Research Office at NArFU in Arkhangelsk, Russia. Postdoctoral Researcher will also work for the research area in particular in managing the UArctic Research Area webpages including e.g. promoting the funding possibilities, and participate in practical activities related to the University of Arctic Research Liaison Office and Thematic Networks Office, such as 2nd UArctic Congress (September 2018) arrangements and other meeting arrangements. Postdoctoral researchers represents UArctic and its Research Liaison Office at institutional, national and international level, which can include participation and working at the international meetings and congresses, and especially the events organized during the Finnish Chairmanship of the Arctic Council (2017-19).

 

The field of the postdoctoral researcher should be on natural resources, health or ICT in an Arctic context to complement the research program conducted at the Thule Institute and Vice-President Research.  

 

The position requires experience and understanding of research and funding schemes and application preparations. Well motivation and excellent social and language skill including being comfortable in oral and written communications in English and in Finnish are essential. Good command of English is required as the working language is mainly English. The knowledge on Arctic organizations and topical Arctic research questions is regarded as an advantage. A successful candidate should also be able to travel if work tasks require it.

 

Further details about the position:

•          Start date: August 1st 2017.

•          Duration: until the end of 2018, possibility to continuation

•          Location of work: Oulu, Finland.

•          Eligibility: a PhD degree (or equivalent) in a relevant Arctic research.

•          Salary: Salary and appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary will be based on the salary scheme of Finnish Universities for teaching and research staff composed of both task specific and personal performance components. The task will be on demand level 5 of the national salary scale for teaching and research personnel of Finnish universities. In addition, supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3% of the salary scale.

The Institute represents the University of Oulu in national and international networks and arranges multidisciplinary seminars and training as well as provides information on environmental and northern issues.
