1. The Department


The Department of Software Science (DSS) a new research and development unit that was established on January 1st, 2017 in the course of TTÜ structural reform from several working groups of the IT Faculty and the former semi-independent research institute - the Institute of Cybernetics. DSS is conducting research in foundations of computer science and software engineering as well as in application fields like high-assurance software, mission and situation-aware systems, cyber-physical systems, natural language technologies, large scale systems, non-linear control systems etc. DSS is also teaching at all levels of higher education and providing not only software development skills, but also skills related to e-governance and its services and technologies, business information technology and cyber security.


Currently DSS calls to apply for a tenure-track faculty position in Data Science at Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level. The concrete title of the position will be decided, depending on the candidate’s merits and career stage. This professorship will be accompanied by positions for 1–2 postdocs and junior researchers-PhD students.


2. Purpose of the Position


The purpose of the position is to build a new research team in TTÜ and develop the existing expertise in descriptive and predictive data analysis based on data mining, machine learning and big data. The Professor of Data Science is expected to lead an applied research topic, to develop international cooperation, publish the results of research and development, work as an expert in his/her field, ensure funding for research and development, represent the Department at scientific conferences and seminars, carry out studies and use up-to-date methodologies and educational technology at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels, organise, develop and be responsible for studies in the group of subjects in his/her field, supervise PhD students.


3. Job Description (Main Tasks)


3.1 Leading research and development activities in core data technologies with strong ties to some application areas and taking steps to secure the funding necessary for those activities; publishing in leading international journals and conferences (50-60% of workload).

3.2 Supervising master and doctoral theses and post-doctoral researchers (up to 20%).

3.3 Teaching at all levels of higher education with emphasis to teaching speciality subjects from master and doctoral programmes; taking part in designing study programmes related to data science and being responsible for the drawing up of syllabi in their subjects as well as monitoring teaching in those subjects and ensuring the presence of study and teaching aids in these subjects and arranging the creation of such aids where necessary (up to 20%).

3.4 Performing administrative activities related to the studies — participating in the work of research organisations, editing research journals and collections of articles, organising conferences, creating and developing the research group etc. (up to 10%).

3.5 DSS will offer a competitive gross salary of at least 60,000 EUR per year.


4. Requirements for the Candidate


We expect the applicants to have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or Applied Mathematics or a related area, and show evidence of exceptional research promise. A minimum of two years’ post-doctoral research experience in data mining, machine learning, big data or statistics is recommendable.

The position is financed from the project “Institutional development program of TTÜ for 2016–2022” (Project code: 2014-2020.4.01.16-0032).

DSS is a newly established faculty department of the School of Information Technologies that was formed recently on the basis of the research groups of the former Department of Computer Science, Department of Computer Control, Department of Informatics and the Institute of Cybernetics (www.ioc.ee). DSS is teaching the full spectrum of Bachelor’s and Master’s courses related to the foundations of computing, information systems and software engineering, and IT applications in industry and society. The research fields of DSS include logic, data analysis, programming languages, high-assurance software, model based software engineering, Large-Scale SystemsDigital Forensics and Cyber SecuritySocio-Technical SystemsProactive TechnologiesNonlinear Control Systems, and Human Language Technology. Research groups of DSS participate in the Estonian Centre of Excellence in ICT Research EXCITE and in Centre of Excellence in Estonian Studies CEES. DSS is also partner in several other H2020 projects.
