ESSENCE is a strategic research program in e-science in collaboration between three Swedish universities with a long tradition of outstanding e-science: Uppsala University, Lund University and Umeå University. E-science involves computational intensive and data-intensive research in collaboration across the subject boundaries. In Uppsala, a large number of projects are supported in the program. Most are computer simulation and data analysis in biology, chemistry and physics. More information about eSSENCE is available at http://essenceofescience.se/

 

ESSENCE seeks two qualified candidates for services as researchers in e-science projects in electromagnetism and sociology using methods of computational science and statistical physics.

 

The two projects and project managers are:

  • Modeling of opinion dynamics at the individual level (Ilkka Mäkinen)
  • Parallelization of Electromagnetic Distribution Problems (Elisabeth Larsson)

Qualification requirements: The  candidate must have a doctorate in a relevant field at the start of the employment. The candidate must master at least one subject area in the project. The applicant should clearly document high self motivation in the application. The applicant should be able to work well in a group of members from different disciplines, be good at giving and receiving constructive criticism, and having a good ability for critical thinking and structured work. These skills are as important as the technical qualifications.

 

The employment is two-year and may include teaching up to 20% of full time depending on availability and interest. You are expected to be able to teach Swedish or English. Excellent knowledge of oral and written English is a requirement. 

 

Application: The  application must contain a detailed (max 2 pages) description of 1) research interests, 2) relevant qualifications for the employment, 3) description of the dissertation, 4) reasons for choosing to work with this project, and 5) proof of the applicant Is self motivated and can work in a team. The application must also contain a CV (CV), copy of relevant grades (translated into Swedish or English), a copy of the doctoral dissertation (at least one draft), copy of all publications and description of the candidate's specific effort, as well as possibly Other relevant documents. In addition, the applicant shall provide contact information to reference persons, as well as specify the earliest possible date of employment.
