Up To Two Postdoctors in Statistical Computation Methods for Machine Learning Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology

Up to two postdoctors in statistical computation methods for machine learning

Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position. The task is to conduct research and education of the highest quality and to cooperate in different ways with society. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of the country's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of 6.5 billion.

The Department of Information Technology has a leading position in both research and education at all levels. The department currently employs about 280 employees, of which 120 teachers and 110 doctoral students. More than 4000 students are studying one or more courses at the department every year and about 30 research groups are linked here. More info: http://www.it.uu.se

The Department of Systems Engineering operates in regulatory engineering, signal processing, machine learning and system analysis. Information on current research areas can be found at: http: // www. it.uu.se/research/systems_and_control . The department is on an expansive stage and is growing in several areas, including machine learning.

Tasks: The service involves research in computational statistics and machine learning and specifically the development of new probabilistic models and new inference methods. This includes, for example:

(1) Developing effective Bayesian inference algorithms for large scale models with latent variables.

(2) To find ways to systematically combine different inference techniques, such as variational inference , sequential Monte Carlo, and deep inference networks, in order to develop new methods that benefit from the various benefits of these technologies.

(3) Developing effective black-box inference algorithms, specifically aimed at inference in so-called probabilistic programs. This research focus may include the implementation of the new methods in the probelistic programming language, Birch, currently under development at the institution.

In addition to method development, the tasks include a theoretical analysis of the developed methods to ensure that they rest on a solid basis and to provide better insight into their characteristics. The tasks also contribute to the scientific discussion and development at the institution, for example by participating in reading circles and doctoral supervision. Depending on the applicant's career interest, the service may also include up to 20% teaching (in English or Swedish).

Qualification Requirements:  To qualify for a postgraduate degree, a doctorate or a foreign degree is deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate, in statistics, machine learning, signal processing or related area, which the employer considers to be relevant to the subject of research, completed no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, the doctorate may have been completed earlier. For special reasons, it refers to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, trusts in trade unions or other similar circumstances.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate experience / competence in applied mathematics, statistics and / or machine learning. Documented experience of statistical computation methods (sequential Monte Carlo, Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, variational inference, random optimization, etc.) is highly desirable. Candidates should be able to evaluate the developed methods through implementation and testing in the appropriate program environment. The candidate should also have a strong driving force to perform basic research; demonstrated ability to conduct research at an internationally recognized level; ability and interest in working in a team; and strong communication skills.

Desirable / merit in general: The  competence in software development is meritorious but not necessary.

Application: The application must contain a personal letter (no more than 2 pages) describing why the candidate has applied for the service, the applicant's qualifications and research interests, a description of the doctoral dissertation, and support for the candidate's motivation and ability to constructive team work. The application must also contain a CV; grades (translated into English or Swedish); a copy of, or a link to, the doctoral dissertation; a full list of publications, with up to five publications of particular importance for the service marked and with a brief description of their main results as well as the applicant's individual contribution to these articles; other relevant documents; as well as earliest possible start date. References with contact information and up to two letter of recommendation can be attached.

Uppsala University values the qualities that even gender distribution and diversity add to the business. We therefore look forward to searching for all sexes and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.
