The Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Victoria is seeking applications for up to four tenure track faculty positions at the assistant professor level with an expected start date of July 1, 2018. We seek individuals with demonstrated potential to build an internationally recognized, externally funded, exceptional research program in the following broad strategic areas: cyber security, interaction design, optimization and smart systems.

To fit well with our areas of strategic directions and strengths, we are looking for researchers who bridge one or more of the following sub-areas. In cyber security: software, IoT, CPS, cloud, networks, blockchain, privacy, applied cryptography. In interaction design: information visualization, visual computing, audio and music computing, cognitive computing, VR/AR. In optimization: algorithms, stochastic, multi-objective, machine learning, data science, data mining, numerical analysis. In smart systems: adaptive, autonomous, and context-aware systems, smart CPS and IoT, smart homes and cities, HPC, cloud, edge computing. It will be viewed positively if the candidate's research program has the potential to complement or extend existing research strengths of the department.

At most two positions are available per area. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in research, graduate student supervision, and teaching. They should demonstrate their interest in collaborating in all aspects of an academic department. Successful candidates have a PhD in computer science or related area, completed by the appointment date. A successful applicant must show potential to become an innovative independent researcher and a leader in their field, and promise of being an outstanding teacher, supervisor and academic professional. An exceptional research record is required including recent publications in top-tier venues.

In the latest Leiden ranking, UVic placed third in Canada for its proportionate research impact in all sciences, and first in mathematics and computer science. Victoria is a great place to live and boasts a vibrant high-tech sector.
