15 PhD Fellowships in ComputerScience, Computer Engineering, Industrial Automation and Data Science in a European Training Network, to develop a Fog/Edge Computing Platform

 

The PhD fellowships are part of the EU-funded project FORA — Fog Computing for Robotics and Industrial Automation.

 

FORA is an ambitious Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network (ETN) that will train the next generation of researchers in Fog Computing to be used in many application areas, including Industry 4.0. Fog Computing, also sometimes called Edge Computing, brings the Cloud “closer to the ground”, to the edge of the network, where machines and “things” are talking to each other, forming the Internet of Things. 

 

FORA will fund and train 15 PhD candidates in the area of Fog Computing, during the period 2017-2021.The FORA ETN was specifically created to boost your research careerread here about the benefits

 

You will be joining a consortium formed of 4 universities and 3 companies from Sweden, Denmark, Austria and Germany, see the partners below. You will be employed at one of these partners and enrolled for your PhD at one of the universities. You are expected to do long-term visits at the other partners in the network, and participate in the training events, summer schools and network meetings across Europe.

 

Scientific objectives

 

Industries are digitalized. The machines are talking. This will bring a net value of USD 1.7 trillion by 2020 worldwide. We need to bring Cloud Computing and Data Analytics closer to the machines, we need to develop an open Fog Computing Platform. The research happens at the intersection of several areas: Cloud Computing and Software Engineering, Industrial Automation and Real-Time Systems, and Machine Learning, Security and Safety.

 

The FORA research objectives focus on: future industrial automation architectures and applications based on Fog Computing, deterministic virtualization and execution, deterministic wired and wireless communication, resource provisioning and resource management, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), real-time data analytics and security. The result will be an open architecture built on open source and open standards, e.g., Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), OPC Unified Architecture (UA) and 5G.

 

Training program

 

The FORA training program consists of

 

  • Network-wide training (individual research projects; visits to other partners; joint training schools that provide knowledge and skills relevant to all PhDs; and conferences). We have 3 training schools, 2 summer schools anda Project Conference.
  • Local training (scientific and skills courses relevant for your individual needs as, at your local host).
  • External training (visits, conferences, tutorials and summer/winter schools outside the network).

 

Who can apply?

 

  • We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a background in computer science (algorithms), software engineering(Cloud Computing, service-oriented computing, middleware, distributed systems), computer engineering(hardware design and computer architecture) and industrial automation and control (distributed automation, robotics, control algorithms), as well as data science (machine learning).
  • Applicants must hold a relevant Master´s degree.
  • The candidate must have less than 4 years of research experience and must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months during the last 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment.
  • The applicants should document a high-level knowledge of the English language. Please include documentation in your application (IELTS Academic, TOEFL, etc.) if available.

TU Wien is Austria’s largest scientific-technical research and educational institution, and participates in FORA with two Research Groups: The Automation Systems Group (ASG) is part of Faculty of Informatics and focuses on research in computer engineering. Particular focus is put on distributed automation (factory automation and building automation), industrial communication systems and automation system integration. In addition, knowledge engineering, formal methods for control systems, and networked embedded systems’ safety and security are investigated. The Distributed Systems Group (DSG) is part of the Information Systems Institute and conducts teaching and research in distributed computing with particular emphasis on elastic cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), Fog/Edge Computing, and the Internet of Services (IoS).
