RESEARCH ASSISTANT, NUS COMPUTING

 

DESCRIPTION

 

Applications are sought for a Research Assistant to work on a Crisis Management Simulation Project. This project is in collaboration with the Thales Group.

 

The project will involve investigating into crisis management capabilities, like modelling crowd behaviour, tracking crowd flow and performing symbiotic simulation to simulate various 'what if' scenarios in the event of a crisis such as bomb threat, flood, breakdown of trains, etc.

 

Science, School of Computing (SoC). SoC is strongly committed to research excellence in all its dimensions: Searching for fundamental results and insights, developing novel computational solutions to a wide range of applications, building large-scale experimental systems and improving the well being of society. We seek to play an active role both internationally and locally in the core and emerging areas of Computer Science and Information Systems.

 

The RA will be using a platform called SE-Star, a simulator that has been developed by Thales. SE-Star is capable of mimicking human behaviours in various environments. The RA will investigate some of these aspects:

 

  • What If Scenario Exploration: virtualization of an observed situation and automatic exploration of multiple alternative scenarios potentially following this situation
  • Automatic Feedback: should one or more of the potential scenarios go wrong, advanced warnings that a problem may occur and the nature of the said problem
  • Decision Support: an automatically generated list of actions to deal with the said problem and to mitigate its consequences

 

Running many ‘What if’ scenarios can be costly, we will also investigate parallelizing the software to speed the simulation up, using parallel techniques such as multicore or GPU techniques.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Candidates should have a degree in Computer Science or related degree and be familiar with

 

o Multi-agent based systems & simulation

o Multiprocessor/multicore technology

o Candidates should be proficient in Java, C++

o Parallel programming (not compulsory but would be helpful)

 

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

 

o Proficient in English (speaking and writing)

o Independent and highly motivated

o Good interpersonal communications

o Able to work in a team
