duties

We are looking for a PhD student who will explore spoken interaction between people and robots, led by Professor Gabriel Skantze. A key research question will be how social robots will adapt their behavior to the user's level of attention, understanding and participation in the interaction. This means that the robot must be able to read the viewing behavior and feedback from the user, and then adjust the speed and way of speaking, in real time. The work will include the implementation of components for conversational systems, data collection and experiments with users in interaction with the robot, and to use this data to develop models of user behavior.

 

As a platform, we use the Furhat robot and open source framework, IrisTK, both developed at KTH. In a recently funded project, which the PhD student will contribute, we will also explore Agumented Reality (eg Microsoft HoloLens) to create avatars or virtual robots that take into account the environment. As an initial test case, we develop a virtual poster presenter that can customize the presentation according to the user's level of interest and understanding. We will also explore how the robot's physical attributes and limitations affect the interaction.

The primary task will be research, but it may also include a small number of institutional services (eg education). Start date is open for discussion, but we see that the service is added as soon as possible.

 

qualifications

Applicants must have a master's degree (or equivalent) within an area relevant to the research, such as computer science, language technology or cognitive science. Applicants are expected to have good skills in programming, and knowledge of experimental methodology and statistics, or machine learning. Applicants should be strongly motivated for research studies, capable of independent work and critical analysis as well as good cooperation and communication skills. Applicants should have good knowledge of English in speech and writing. We also expect applicants to have a deep interest in voice communication between people, and between people and machines.
