PhD fellows in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning

 

Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering two PhD scholarships in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning (NLP/ML) commencing September 1 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The two scholarships are funded by a Google Focused Research Award.  

 

Description of the scientific environment  

The NLP group at the Department of Computer Science is led by Professor Anders Søgaard and is ranked in the top 10 in the world and 2nd in Europe. See current members at http://coastalcph.github.io/ The Department of Computer Science also has strong research groups in related fields such as Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, and Computer Vision.  

 

Project description  

The Google Focused Research Award project will be about using reinforcement learning and multi-task learning to induce multilingual natural language understanding models (e.g., frame-semantic parsers) from high-level expectations about what documents are about. Some of the work will most likely be in collaboration with Google Research. The candidates are expected to provide a project description of about 2-4 pages, describing research interests and what the candidates would bring to the table.

Job description  

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:  

 

• To manage and carry through your research project  

• Attend PhD courses  

• Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis  

• Teach and disseminate your research  

• To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad  

• Work for the department  

 

Formal requirements  

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, or related fields, with good results and good English skills. In our assessment of your qualifications, we put emphasis on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.  

 

 

Terms of employment  

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  

 

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  

 

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 317.459 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.852). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
