Position Summary

The Academic Computing System Administrator reports to the Director of Academic Technology and Learning Services and is responsible for providing system and utility support for the Faculty Resource Center (FRC) and the instructional technology program. The position performs systems level hardware and software support for the learning management system, currently Blackboard, along with other academic systems including Panopto and Collaborate. The position interfaces with faculty, staff, and students to support their use of academic technology.


Characteristic Duties

Administers and supports the University's cloud-based learning management system, currently Blackboard and its associated This includes working with Blackboard Support to monitor performance and troubleshooting problems.
Administers and supports the other cloud-based academic systems including Panopto
Administers and supports other academic LINUX and Windows based servers
Creates and maintains scripts to support FRC servers, processes, and tools
Assists the FRC Supervisor with the connectivity of academic systems such as Blackboard Learn/Ultra and other available tools using LTI connectivity and/or building blocks
Administers the set up and maintenance of desktop computers supported by the Faculty Resource Center
Interacts with the college system administrators to support FRC related software including sharing ideas about academic and classroom technology
Assists the FRC Supervisor in working with users to support their use of supported academic and classroom technology

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in computer science, MIS, education technology or closely associated discipline. An equivalent combination of job related experience, education, and robust certifications consistent with other minimum qualifications may be substituted; minimum of three years of experience in Linux System Administration in a production environment; experience with SQL and database queries; experience with PERL, Python, and UNIX shell scripting and with Apache, PHP, MySQL/Postgress or a related DBMS; experience with MS Windows desktop administration; knowledge of Windows server administration; knowledge of computer hardware maintenance; good interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation with the ability to multi-task, work independently and as a team member; ability to lift equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting Blackboard Learn or Ultra, or other learning management software; experience using Panopto or similar lecture capture technologies; knowledge of video conferencing systems such as Blackboard Collaborate environment; experience managing a LAMP environment



Typical work hours are Monday through Friday 8 to 5. Work days and hours vary due to the nature of the University environment and the responsibilities of this position, with occasional evening and weekend work required.
