The Department of Computer Science and Technology (also known as the Computer Laboratory) is an academic department within the University of Cambridge that encompasses Computer Science, along with many aspects of Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Following a recent donation from DeepMind, the Department has an exciting opportunity for outstanding researchers who are seeking to build the experiences and research profile that will enable them to progress to research leadership role in future. This is a 5-year appointment, during which the Fellow will conduct research in computer science or artificial intelligence (AI) and provide teaching and supervision for postgraduate students. As part of developing a balanced academic career which values the nurturing of new talents and generations, the DeepMind Fellow will be given time and support to be a role model and ambassador for Computer Science, encouraging future generations in Computer Science, especially emerging talent from Black backgrounds that are currently particularly under-represented in this field.

Duties and responsibilities for research associates include:

  • Research and scholarship

  • Teaching and learning support

  • Liaison and networking

  • Planning and organising research activities

Essential knowledge and experience for the role include:

  • A PhD in a relevant specialist subject (or expected to have completed by Summer 2021), or equivalent experience.

  • Research experience, with sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

  • The ability to continually update knowledge in the specialist area and engage in continuous professional development.

  • Experience of managing own workload.

  • An enthusiasm to nurture role models and ambassadors for Black researchers of the future.

Appointment to Senior Research Associate will be considered for exceptional candidates who are able to demonstrate a track record of independent research. Senior Research Associates would be expected to have experience in postdoctoral research or equivalent experience; a strong track record of high-quality research outputs in relevant research areas; and the ability to demonstrate the potential to develop collaborations and obtain additional research funding.

  • A full publications list (including information about the applicant's contribution to each paper).

  • A short proposal outlining your plans during the fellowship (up to 2 pages, with additional pages for references).

  • A teaching statement which should include the descriptions of at least two short Masters projects that you would be interested in supervising. The projects should be feasible for students who have a reasonable amount of programming experience and should correspond to about three months full-time work.

  • Names of two referees who may be contacted if you are invited to interview.
