Faculty on Information Technology is currently seeking to fulfill an Associate Professor (tenure track) position in data analytics, starting 1.8.2017 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed time period of five years.


University of Jyväskylä has declared the use of computational thinking and data analytics in decision making as one of its strengthening areas. Computational methods and data analysis form a basis to support decision making in e.g. complex systems and cyber-physical environments as well as profiling fields of the university.


The Faculty of Information Technology is responsible for developing the seamless orchestration of the subdisciplines of data analytics (management of information flows, analytics, decision making) and looks for a candidate that develops these.


The main tasks to be performed by the associate professor concern the method development and management of the research to develop a seamless chain of elements for decision analytics. 


The associate professor is expected to have deep understanding of data-analytics, in particular prescriptive analytics, as well as modelling, optimization and decision support. The candidate should have programming skills and be familiar with statistical modeling. Knowledge of multiobjective optimization and computational intelligence is desirable.


The associate professor will be in charge of developing the seamless chain of decision analytics to identify hidden patterns, discover implicit relationships, construct appropriate models and formulate decision problems, which represent the decision maker’s preferences. The focus is on an adaptive approach where the chain of elements can be reconfigured depending on the context. The decision maker can either be a human or a part of an automated decision process.


The associate professor is expected to have strong international research activity. The associate professor is also expected to apply for external funding and participate in education, particularly at the graduate and postgraduate level, as well as to have the ability to supervise theses.


The candidate sought is in the active development stage of his/her career with excellent research merits. Candidates are expected to have the potential to lead a top-level research group with a possibility of succeeding in seeking competitive research funding (e.g. EU, ERC, Academy of Finland).

The appointment is for a fixed period of five years, see tenure track path. An especially distinguished and unquestionably qualified person may exceptionally be appointed directly to the position of professor presuming there is no candidate available who is more competent and suitable candidate for the position. The purpose of the fixed-term is, that the Associate Professor gathers enough merits for full Professor position. When an employee has been selected for a fixed-term associate professorship, an evaluation procedure is used regarding the employee’s merits for a professorship filled through an invitation procedure. The evaluation procedure shall begin before the end of the fixed-term contract. The evaluation procedure follows the same practices used in the expert evaluation procedure for filling a professorship. 


The Associate Professor’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands levels 7 (3 851,33 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid. 


Four months trial period is applied to the filling of the position.
