Professorship in Communication Technologies

1. The Department

Thomas Johann Seebeck Department of Electronics (TJS ELIN) at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia, was established in 1962. The research activities at the TJS ELIN cover the fields from solid-state electronics and technologies, over applications of impedance spectroscopy related technologies in bioelectronics and material science applications, up to modern communications and microwave technologies and solutions. TJS ELIN is responsible for the design and development of Horizon 2020 ERA-Chair initiative (Project COEL) in cognitive electronics. TJS ELIN is also teaching at all levels of higher education.

TJS ELIN calls to apply for a tenure-track faculty position in Communication Technologies at Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level. The concrete title of the position will be decided, depending on the candidate’s merits and career stage. This professorship will be accompanied by positions for 1–2 postdocs and junior researchers-PhD students. Major telecommunications company Telia has endorsed to support this particular position.

2. Purpose of the Position

The overall objective of the professorship is to develop and sustain research and development activities within the domain of communication technologies at high international level. Thus, the professorship position requires participating in and leading international research consortiums, publishing in leading international journals and conferences, mentoring doctoral and master students, and contributing to international scientific organizational activities (reviewing, management, and organization of conferences, participation in decision-making bodies). Furthermore, the professorship position requires developing and implementing courses (e.g. lectures and laboratories) related to smart/cognitive communication networks and components thereof. The team associated to the professorship is also expected to conduct technology transfer activities through R&D contracts, directly with the industry and/or via external funding sources.

3. Job Description (Main Tasks)

The professorship position encompasses activities (to various extents) within the following state-of-the-art and emerging topics:

3.1 Research, development, and teaching related to networking technologies covering 5G and beyond, as well as IP-based solutions, device-to-device communication, network virtualization, and software-defined networks (SDN), public safety and mission critical networks;

3.2 Research, development, and teaching related to digital communication systems, wireless channel characterization and modeling, realistic performance evaluation of the communication systems;

3.3 Research, development, and teaching related to wireless sensor networks, internet of things, and cognitive electronics applications, e.g. wireless body area networks, robustness and reliability, resource-efficient design and performance evaluation of MAC and routing protocols, radio access technologies such as BLE and NB-IoT, as well as smart signal processing techniques for the above. 

3.4 Teaching at all levels of higher education with emphasis to teaching speciality subjects from master and doctoral programmes; taking part in designing study programmes related to communication technologies.

Additionally, the expertise of the candidates should include elements of the following topics: adaptive communication, near field communication and cognitive radio solutions; internet of electronics, applications in cognitive electronic systems; energy harvesting and self-harvesting in autonomous portable devices; low complexity compressed sensing algorithms and architectures for wireless sensor networks with application to the internet of things.

TJS ELIN will offer a competitive gross salary of at least 60,000 EUR per year.

4. Requirements for the Candidate

PhD or an equivalent degree in communication or electronics engineering, or a related field, with a specialization that is relevant to the position. We expect that the candidates have very good research record of accomplishment demonstrated by publications in high-level international peer-reviewed journals and leading conferences. Having patents or patent applications is an advantage.

Experience with industrial projects and technology transfer activities and coordinating the preparation of planning future research directions and initiation and preparation of e.g. Horizon 2020 research projects will be looked as a strong advantage of the candidate. Finally, the experience with teaching and mentoring in higher education within the above named topics is an advantage.
