Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant position on a project on “TERAhertz high power LINKS using photonic devices, tube amplifiers and Smart antennas”.

The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) is an exciting and dynamic environment with a research portfolio of £42M. In REF2014, 91% of the School’s Computer Science submitted outputs were rated 3* or 4*, with 99% for Electronic Engineering. The School has more than 70 research active academic staff, about 60 post-doctoral researchers and about 220 PhD students. Six academics hold prestigious research fellowships from organizations such as EPSRC and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Details about the School can be found at, and details about the Antennas and Electromagnetics Group at

We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to participate in an ERC funded project “TERAhertz high power LINKS using photonic devices, tube amplifiers and Smart antennas (TERALINKS)’’. The research will be undertaken under the supervision of Professor Yang Hao. The project is dedicated to the demonstration of real-time THz communication systems, with the 200-300 GHz bandwidth, in an operational environment. TERALINKS project aims to integrate three key enabling technologies: THz sources (photonics-based for bandwidth and core network compatibility), THz power generation (using travelling wave tubes), and advanced THz antennas. The first step of the project will be to come out with a design scheme for specific required configuration. The second work step is to physically validate the predictions of the down-selected prototypes through manufacturing and testing them in laboratory environment.

The ideal candidate should possess an excellent knowledge of antenna analysis and design, THz signals, and photonic devices, along with knowledge of THz data modulated signals, sources, power generation. Experience in mobile communications and network and knowledge of other relevant research areas such as 3D printing, microstamping, micromachining, and inkjet printing and THz electronics will be an advantage. In addition, applicants will have at least good skills in analytical/numerical modeling, knowledge of the common programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Matlab. The candidate should have completed the PhD or equivalent degree in Electric and/or Electronic Engineering before taking up the post; good communication skills are also welcome.

This is a full time post for 19 months starting 1 Sept 2017 or until 31 March 2019, whichever is the shorter. Starting salary will be £38,062, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Yang Hao ( or by phone: +442078825341.
