The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Laval University, one of Canada's leading research universities. DMS offers a leading research and teaching environment. It teaches students in French specialized programs in mathematics and statistics (bachelor's, master's and doctorate), biostatistics (master's and doctorate) and, also, students in engineering programs, education, etc. Statistical researchers are associated with some of Laval University's research centers, including the Center for Big Data Research and the new modeling center, CIMMUL.


Laval University is located in the beautiful city of Quebec, UNESCO World Heritage City and capital of the province of Quebec. With more than 40,000 students, the University is a stimulating living and working environment, in the heart of an urban community of 750,000 inhabitants.

Job Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Laval University is seeking applications for a position as professor of statistics. Although all fields of specialization in statistics or applied probabilities are eligible, expertise in the processing of big data, for example large data, unstructured data or data at a high rate, is required. Candidates who are in the process of obtaining a Ph.D., as well as PhDs in a related field (such as computer science) while having a strong expertise in statistics, are invited to apply. The appointment will normally be at the rank of Assistant Professor and the starting date would normally be in the summer of 2018.


The incumbent will:


  • recruit and mentor graduate students, 
  • perform and publish research in his area of expertise, 
  • solicit funding from major granting agencies, 
  • provide three-cycle statistics courses in French, including service courses for large groups, 
  • contribute to the management and promotion of the Department's programs, 
  • and, more generally, participate in the development and proper functioning of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Laval University.

Selection criteria

The candidate will:


  • hold a PhD in statistics or a diploma deemed equivalent, or hold a doctorate in a related field, while having a strong expertise in statistics,
  • have a strong expertise in Big Data database processing and an excellent knowledge of the necessary IT tools to do this,
  • be able to propose a stand-alone research program with a big data component, for which it will be possible to quickly obtain adequate funding, 
  • Demonstrate the potential to mentor graduate students in statistics and undertake research in collaboration with researchers in the field of Big Data, for example with members of the Big Data Research Center from Laval University, 
  • Demonstrate the ability and interest to teach many of the Department's three-cycle statistics courses, including courses for large groups, as well as courses related to massive data processing, 
  • Demonstrate excellent teaching skills, both for teaching courses for large groups and for teaching statistics in three cycles,
  • to be able to teach in French or to commit to doing so within one year.
