The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering is one of the most research active schools at City, both in terms of publication numbers and research income. The school contributed decisevely to City's excellent results in The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, an exercise to assess research quality at all UK higher education research institutions. The REF rated 75.7% of City's submissions as being of world-leading 4* (23.3%) and internationally excellent 3* (52.4%) quality. Almost identical percentages were obtained for reserach in the Department of Mathematics.

The Centre for Compressor Technology at the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences are seeking to appoint a Research Associate on a fixed term contract initially for two years. The project involves Reseag rch into multiphase positive displacement screw machines by using CFD with particular focus on compressors and expanders. The post will also offer possibility to involve in experimental research and will require some teaching commitments. 


The main responsibilites of a succesful candidate will be to conduct experimental, analytical and computational studies on rotary positive displacemen screw machines that include two phase flow.

Other areas of contribution will be in research administration, dissemination of research findings to conferences, journals and funding bodies, protection of IP and commercialisation activities and some limited teaching.
This position has external funding for 2 years.


Person Specification

The post holder should have a relevant PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. The post holder should have experience in research in the areas of numerical nd experimental methods in thermal power systems, Computational Fluid Dynamics for two phase flow and thermodynamic cycle analysis and optimisation.

Prior experience in modelling of rotary machines and flows including fluids with non-ideal gas behaviour is desirable.
