Research Associate in Nanophotonics & Light Scattering from Nanoparticles

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,635 - £41,864 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

We wish to recruit a Research Associate with expertise in the area of nanophotonics and light scattering from nanoparticles to join the photonic innovations lab at UCL ( and to work on the European Research Council (ERC) starting grant, IntelGlazing.IntelGlazing is a recently awarded ERC project whose objective is to create novel insulation and light control technologies based on nanotechnology and smart materials. The Research Associate in IntelGlazing will be responsible for the design, development and experimentation of tuneable nanophotonic coatings that will passively control the amount of light and heat transmitted through them based on the ambient environmental conditions. Such 'smart' coatings can find application in architecture and in the automotive and aviation industries amongst others. Upon successful demonstration of small-scale prototypes, the RA will have the opportunity to work on scaling up their processes with the objective of demonstrating full-size prototypes to be tested in real environmental conditions with the aid of our industrial partners. The position is available from January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.The post is available for a period of 2 years in the first instance, further funding to support the post may be available.

Applicants should have a PhD (or be about to submit) in one of the following areas: light scattering from nanoparticles, design and fabrication of nanoantennas, nanophotonic structures, plasmonics, metamaterials / metasurfaces or similar. Applicants should also have a first degree in an engineering, physical , chemical or material sciences subject. Experience with FinateDifferece Time Domain (FDTF) or Finite Element Methods (FEM) for modelling nanostructures is essential. Experience in heat transport and heat radiative phenomena is desirable but not essential. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on having been awarded a PhD. If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (£30,316 - £31,967 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submissions of the PhD thesis including corrections.
