Job summary


We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant or Research Associate to join the Data Science Institute with the founding Director Professor Yike Guo and his team. The Research Assistant/ Associate will join an enthusiastic team and a wider community of research scientists, bioinformaticians and IT experts to develop analytical models to support a number of projects within the Data Science Institute.

 

Examples of existing projects that the post holder may work on include the EU IMI (Innovative Medicines Initiative) funded projects eTRIKS (European Translational Information & Knowledge Management Services) and Biovacsafe (Biomarkers for Enhanced Vaccine Immunosafety). The post will be based at Imperial College on the South Kensington Campus, in the Department of Computing.

 

Duties and responsibilities


You will be working on the ongoing eTRIKS and BioVacSafe projects. eTRIKS is a large European public-private project aimed at developing a knowledge management software infrastructure for the management and analysis of data from translational medicine studies.

 

The BioVacSafe project is a public-private consortium consisting of partners from experts form Europe's leading vaccine producing companies, major academic institutions and non-governmental organizations. It draws upon the latest life science research findings to profile how individuals respond to different components of vaccines at the cellular, genetic and molecular levels.

 

The Data Science Institute at Imperial College London collaborates on many more medical related data driven programmes, of which further information can be found on our website. The group has a successful track record of research at the interface between computing, statistics, mathematics and biology.

 

Essential requirements


At Research Assistant level you must have a good first degree (or equivalent) or Masters (or equivalent) in a related area. At Research Associate level you must have a PhD (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, biology, computer science or significant experience.

 

You must have a proven track record of biomedical research, experience in handling/processing large and complex datasets, good knowledge of modern statistical programming languages (e.g R, MatLab), programming languages (e.g. Java, Perl, Python) and experience working with SQL and UNIX/LINUX.

 

A proven research record with publications in the relevant areas is also required. You must be fluent in English.

 

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 to £34,040 per annum.
