This vacancy is a part of the recruitment campaign where the University of Turku significantly enhances its research, development and innovation in the field of artificial intelligence for future technologies.


The Faculty of Science and Engineering invites applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Complex Systems. Candidates for Full Professorship / Associate professorship will have a distinguished academic career and an established international reputation in their fields, as well as an excellent publications record and success in acquiring external research funding. For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek highly talented and already merited researchers beyond their post doc phase yet still at their early academic career, and who have shown potential, initiative, and innovation in research and teaching. We expect that candidates are active members of academic and societal networks and have contacts with business, trade and industry.


The professor is expected to work on the theory of complex systems with emphasis on algebraic, combinatorial and computational aspects of complex discrete dynamical systems.


The duties of the professor include conducting and supervising scientific research, teaching – including supervising Master and PhD students, staying up-to-date with the most current scientific developments in the field, and participating in societal interaction and international cooperation in the field. The professor is expected to co-operate with other research groups, to form and lead his or her own research group and to obtain external research funding at both domestic and international level.


The research of the department (linkki) is of high international level. Research is carried out in collaboration with many partners. In particular, the collaboration between the department and the department of future technologies and the corresponding department of Åbo Akademi is traditionally very close. TUCS Centre for Computer Science, a joint institution maintained by the two universities plays a key role in this collaboration. In mathematics the most prominent strategic area of interest has already a long time been discrete mathematics
and theoretical computer science. For the position in question we want to select a high level researcher with a good international standing.


The department is also responsible for the teaching in mathematics and statistics for the whole university. Each year 80 new mathematics and statistics majors begin their studies. The department also plays an important role in teacher education and consequently
good Finnish skills are an asset.


The position is subject to a four-month trial period.


A person selected for the post will be working at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.


The salary for this particular post is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel (YPJ). The salary shall be determined when drawing up the employment contract.
