Position description

The Department of Linguistics and the School of Computer Science of McGill University invite applications for a joint tenure-track appointment in Computational Linguistics. The appointment is expectd to be at the rank of Assistant Professor and to begin on August 1, 2019. We seek candidates with interests in the study of language from computational, mathematical, and quantitative perspectives. The ideal candidate will have expertise in both the language sciences and computer science. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, computational linguistics, natural language processing, speech processing, computational cognitive science, machine learning applied to language data, and quantitative modeling of language.

 

Outstanding candidates may be eligible to receive a CIFAR Chair in AI (https://www.cifar.ca/ai/pan-canadian-artificial-intelligence-strategy), depending on their research profile. The successful candidate who satisfies the eligibility conditions of the Canada Research Chair program may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Chair in Computational Linguistics, which provides protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment. The Department of Linguistics and the School of Computer Science offer a collegial environment with opportunities for interaction with world-class researchers in linguistics and AI, involving topics such as syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonology, phonetics, language variation and change, mathematical/quantitative linguistics, psycholinguistics, machine learning, robotics, social data science, natural language processing, theory of computation, big data systems, and many more areas

 

Montreal is home to very active linguistics, language science, and AI communities, including four linguistics departments, ties to many other units such as Psychology and the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, university-led institutes such as MILA and the Centre for Research on Brain, Language and Music, industry-led AI research groups (Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Samsung, Borealis, Thales), as well as a thriving and rapidly growing AI and data science start-up community. Montreal is a historic and cosmopolitan city, home to four universities, and considered one of the best cities for students.

 

Job Duties

The successful applicant will be expected to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program, to communicate research findings in both professional and public forums, to contribute to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in both Linguistics and Computer Science, and to engage in service both within and outside the University.

 

Qualifications and Education requirements

A PhD in linguistics, computer science or related disciplines and demonstrated excellence in research in the area(s) of specialization.

CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR

A successful candidate may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Chair in Computational Linguistics. Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging researchers (i.e., individuals who are no more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree). Career interruptions (e.g., maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, family care, etc.) will be taken into consideration using the Tier 2 justification process to review the candidate’s eligibility. Potential applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree with career interruptions may contact the institution to have their eligibility reviewed through the Tier 2 justification process. Note also, that the Canada Research Chair is also open to internal candidates who already hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at McGill University, are active in the research area described, and contribute to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in both Linguistics and Computer Science.

 

For CRC Tier 2 nominees at the rank of Assistant Professor who are within three years of their PhD, one referee must be the PhD supervisor. Internal applicants to the CRC must submit a recent curriculum vitae and a statement of research interests aligned with the designated subject area for the chair.
