Professor in Machine Learning at UDEM Mila Canada

PROFESSOR IN MACHINE LEARNING AT UDEM

Faculty of Arts and Science / Department of Computer Science and Operations Research (DIRO)

Job description

In connection with the grant of the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (IVADO), the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research is seeking applications for three full-time tenure-track positions (two as assistant or associate professors, and one as associate or full professor), in areas related to machine learning and its applications (e.g., healthcare, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics). The appointed candidates will have the possibility to join Mila, the largest academic research group in the area of deep learning, worldwide (see below for more info), and become an academic member of the IVADO data science community. Through their membership with Mila, the candidate(s) could also be nominated for a prestigious Canada CIFAR AI (CCAI) chair.

Responsibilities

The appointed candidate will be expected to teach at all three levels of the curriculum, supervise graduate students, engage in research and publication, and contribute to the academic life and reputation of the University.

Requirements

Ph. D. in computer science or in a related field.

A proven publication record, illustrating the candidate’s ability to publish influential work in top-tier venues.

Expertise in machine learning, possibly with a focus on one or more of the related areas.

University teaching and/or supervision experience.

Proficiency in French within a reasonable period of time*.

About the MILA

Mila is the largest academic research group in the area of deep learning, worldwide, bringing together faculty from U. Montréal, McGill U., École Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal. Beyond deep learning, it groups machine learning strengths in reinforcement learning, optimization, graphical models, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, and more. Mila researchers pioneered deep learning more than a decade ago and remain an academic pillar of this approach to artificial intelligence. Mila professors founded the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) and Yoshua Bengio continues to be general chair, after having been program chair and general chair for NIPS (the leading machine learning conference). Mila has been the home of several scientific breakthroughs in deep learning, including neural word embeddings, deep generative models such as GANs and deep auto-encoders, content-based soft-attention (which revolutionized machine translation), showing that ReLUs enable training of deep nets, showing why deep nets can have an exponential statistical advantage, busting the myths about local minima in neural networks, and much more. Mila is being generously funded by governments as well as by industry and philanthropy (with hundreds of millions of dollars having been promised for the next few years).

Mila will receive 30 M$ from the Canadian government to create a number of AI chairs over the next few years, as part of the Pan-Canadian AI strategy, which focuses on AI and particularly machine learning, at all levels of seniority. Consequently, the AI / machine learning faculty to be recruited at DIRO will be expected to be strong enough to obtain one of these Canada CIFAR AI (CCAI) chairs.
