It is one of the largest and the most multidisciplinary universities in Finland.

 

Job Title, Field and Position

 

The position is a Professor in Traffic Networks and Technology. The focus of the professorship is on transport logistics, automation and innovative design, construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure. In addition, the experience in traffic management, automation systems and automotive systems as well as in the operation and development of transport systems, especially in the north and changing conditions, are considered as a merit.

 

The position is located in the Structures and Construction Technology Research Unit, where the task is to lead the Traffic networks and technology research team. Currently, the group comprises of a university teacher, laboratory staff and researchers. In the Research Unit, there is a Professor in Digital Construction and Mining, a Senior Research Fellow in Structural Analysis and Structural Mechanics, and some 30 other teachers and researchers. A new Degree Program in Civil Engineering set up by the University of Oulu on 1 September 2017 is responsible for teaching, compiling and obtaining the necessary teaching from different research units. In the Degree Program, approximately 40 - 75 M.Sc. (Eng.) degrees are granted annually.

 

The Structures and Construction Technology Research Unit supports the research in the Faculty of Technology in a versatile manner. Steel and metal construction as well as structural engineering expertise support the faculty's steel research. The Structures and Construction Technology Research Unit specializes in the research and education for the design and implementation of exceptionally demanding structures as defined in the Finnish legislation in the design and implementation of so-called exceptionally demanding structures. The sphere of operations covers residential construction and demanding industrial construction sites such as bridges, power plants and mining facilities. Construction technology research has focused on digitalization of construction processes, in particular BIM in the design and production of routes, bridges and buildings, construction automation and robotics in factories and construction sites, as well as automation for moving work machines and vehicles. The group of technical mechanics provides courses in material strength and mechanics required for Degree Programs in both Construction and Mechanical Engineering.

 

Job Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Language Proficiency

 

The Professor is responsible for the research and teaching in traffic networks and technology, and to develop them together with researchers and teachers in other areas of study. The candidate is required to have in-depth knowledge and evidence of research-based teaching in the field. The candidate is expected to have strong evidence of national, European and international networking and collaboration, as well as planning of international and national projects, acquiring extramural funding (e.g. industrial financing, Business Finland, Academy of Finland, EU funding programs, others) and leadership. Industrial experience and industrial contact network are considered as merits. The applicant is also expected to be active in international publishing and have experience in supervising doctoral dissertations in the field.

 

Under section 33 of the Universities Act, a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific or artistic work, give education based on it and follow developments in science or art and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his or her field.

 

The required qualifications for the post of professor include a doctoral degree, high quality scientific competence, experience in supervising scientific research, evidence of multidisciplinary research collaboration, the ability to provide high quality research-based education and the ability to supervise final theses, as well as evidence of international collaboration in their field of research.

 

When assessing the applicants, the merits that are taken into consideration include scientific publications and other research results with scientific value, success in acquiring supplementary research funding, experience in leading research groups, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the skill to create teaching material, other teaching merits, the demonstration lecture, and the doctoral theses the applicant has supervised. In addition, the following merits will be taken into consideration: the applicant’s activity in the scientific community and university administrative tasks, practical experience, and success in applying for supplementary research funding, evidence of cooperation in the field and scientific work abroad, international duties as well as management and interaction skills.

 

The teaching language at the University of Oulu is Finnish. It is also possible to teach in English.

 

Salary

The salary will be based on the levels 8 – 9 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific component).

The position is filled as of 1.9.2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of six (6) months is applied in the beginning of this permanent position.

  4. A brief research and action plan in English (max 5 pages).
  5. A single pdf file of at most fifteen (15) publications or other works, which should be numbered in accordance with the list of publications, which the applicant wants to be taken into account when assessing his/her qualifications and merits.

Before being officially accepted for the position, the successful applicant must present his/her original degree diplomas or certified copies thereof, as well as signed curriculum vitae, to the faculty.

 

Expert Assessment

The Research Council of the University of Oulu will select at least two experts to be consulted regarding the selection process. When selecting the experts, the respective specializations of the applicants in the field are taken into consideration, and general fairness is observed otherwise as well.

 

The applicants are informed about the selection of the experts.

 

Demonstration Lecture and Interview

The recruitment committee will, if needed, interview the top applicants and arrange the demonstration lectures when necessary.

 

Official Employment

The Dean will make her proposition based on the recruitment committee’s proposal and submits this, justifications and attachments included, to the Vice Rector, who will make the decision concerning the employment of the successful applicant.

TEACHING PORTFOLIO OUTLINE

According to the practice approved by the University of Oulu, the teaching skills are evaluated according to the following outline:

  1. Teaching philosophy, teaching strategies and methods (Teacher’s self-reflection on his/her teaching style, a personal background idea of teaching; how are these reflected in teaching work? A description of oneself as a teacher and an implementer of educational work.)
  2. Practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching
  3. Description of educational material (curricula, handouts, assignments, workbooks)
  4. Professional development as a teacher
  5. Evaluation from teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards and assessed demonstration lectures)
  6. Future teaching goals and plans (teacher’s plans for future directions in his/her teaching development, for example in relation to the teaching curriculum of the Degree Programme in Civil Engineering)
