Lecturer Below the Bar in Computer Science, Fixed Term Post x2

Applications are invited for an appointment as Lecturer Fixed Term (1-year contract) in Computer Science at the National University of Ireland Galway. Up to two new posts may be filled as a result of this recruitment.

NUI Galway, which was originally founded in 1845, is a publicly funded university and has earned international recognition as a research-led university with a commitment to top-quality teaching and research. According to the 2017 QS World University Rankings, NUI Galway is in the Top 1% of universities in the world, consolidating its position among the world’s elite educational institutions. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2017, Computer Science at NUI Galway was ranked second in Ireland, in the world ranking band 201-250.

The University now wishes to recruit outstanding individuals to full-time posts as Lecturer (Fixed Term) in the Discipline of Information Technology within the College of Engineering and Informatics. The successful candidate(s) will actively contribute to the University’s strategic vision for ICT, and will participate in research, teaching, student project supervision, and programme administration across a complimentary portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate ICT programmes.

Research contribution is of fundamental importance in the role. It is anticipated that the new appointee(s) will develop an outstanding research programme in a relevant area of Computer Science, attracting R&D funding in fundamental and applied research areas. The appointee(s) will also be required to develop national and international collaborations with academia and industry. The new appointee(s) will be expected to disseminate their work through peer-reviewed journals and high-impact conferences.

The successful candidate(s) will be required to contribute strongly to teaching fundamental and applied computer science on our portfolio of undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, as well as participating in programme administration, programme promotion, and outreach activities. The appointed candidate will be expected to develop new curricula, prepare course materials, deliver course work, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in their project work, and conduct related administrative duties.

At NUI Galway, the existing Discipline of Information Technology is currently being developed into a new School of Computer Science. This is a very exciting development that will both heighten the profile of Computer Science and will open up many new opportunities, and there is an opportunity for the new appointee to influence the development of the research and teaching agenda of the new School of Computer Science.

The successful candidate shall possess:
• A primary degree in computer science or a closely related discipline;
• Normally, a PhD in degree in computer science or a closely related discipline;
• Experience in third level teaching and student supervision;
• Knowledge and experience of technological innovations in teaching, including online;

• A strong commitment to working with colleagues within existing, established research centres and groups and a willingness to develop and lead new research activity and research groupings;
• A strong commitment to working with the ICT industry and closely related industries;
• A commitment to contribute directly to new and existing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including the development of new taught modules;
• A clear vision for how their teaching and research aligns to the requirements of the post and complements that of the Discipline/School.
