Assistant or Associate Professor in Information Systems Science (tenure track)

The Faculty of Information Technology invites applications for a fix-term position of Assistant Professor (3-5 years) or Associate Professor (5 years) in Information Systems Science, tenure track starting on 8/2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.  


University of Jyväskylä is a research-oriented university. The Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä is the first and largest in its field in Finland. Information systems science has been taught at the University of Jyväskylä since 1967.


The IT Faculty’s mission is to take on the challenges in research and education brought on by the developing information technology and digitalization. In research, education and stakeholder collaboration, the Faculty combines comprehensively technology and information to the viewpoints of organizations, business and people. The IT Faculty is situated at beautiful lakeside Mattilanniemi campus. Faculty employs 180 people and, currently, there are 2400 undergraduate students and 150 postgraduate students. Teaching is arranged both in Finnish and in English.   


Information Systems faculty members have published their research in leading Information Systems journals, such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Journal of Management Information Systems, and others. Faculty members hold editorial positions in reputable IS journals. Information Systems of the faculty has very strong connections to industry. Data collection opportunities are outstanding. The Faculty of Information Technology aims to be one of the leading research institutions in Europe in Information Systems field. The profile and the competence of the hired candidate must be at such a level that it supports the achievement of this goal. The selected candidate is expected to conduct high level scientific research published in the best information systems journals, such as MIS Quarterly, Information systems research, and others so called Basket of 6 journals. The candidate will also be expected to seek external research funding, actively co-operate in terms of research with the other faculty members, to contribute to teaching and act as a supervisor for Ph.D. and Master level students. Experience of conducting high quality scientific research by solving practically significant problems in company settings is considered as strength. Evidence of external research funding is also considered as a merit.


Applicants are asked to tell in the application, which level (assistant or associate) of the tenure track system he/she is applying for.


The applicants’ merits are evaluated in relation to the length of their post-doctoral research careers. In the evaluation of research merits, the premium is put on the publications of top information systems journals. Also publications in the top outlets of related fields (e.g., HCI, organization and management research, service research, software engineering), as well as other JUFO 2 and JUFO 3 level publications are counted as a merit. (JUFO refers to the Finnish Publication Forum levels


Candidates for Assistant Professor position must demonstrate at least a potential to publish in the top journals. Candidates for Associate Professor position must have publications in the top journals.


Ability to obtain external funding is expected at the level of assistant professor. Associate level applicant is expected to have evidence of substantial external funding or at least very strong potential to acquire external funding. In addition, the ability to lead the externally funded research projects resulting in doctoral theses and top-level publications are considered as merits on all levels of the tenure track system.


International work experience and work experience gained outside the university where the PhD was earned are considered as an advantage.

A position of Assistant Professor is for a fixed term of 3 to 5 years and a position of Associate Professor is for a fixed term of 5 years (according to the Tenure track at the University of Jyväskylä). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for the next step. The evaluation procedure shall begin before the end of the fixed-term contract.


Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees.

5. A short (1–2 pages) description of the applicant’s pedagogical training and teaching merits

6. A short (1–2 pages) description of the applicant’s international activities and his/her experience in the field of societal interaction

7. A short (1–2 pages) description of how the applicant intends to develop research, teaching and societal interaction in the Faculty of Information Technology at the field of information systems science.
