JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centra and Digital Society Institute.

 

Performing excellent research and education in the area of pervasive computing, ubiquitous computing, and Internet of Things. The focus will be on investigating co‐existence and co‐operation of sensing, wireless networking, computing and the interfaces between humans and digital technology in the broadest sense and how these are affected by one another.

Education in the context of Creative Technology:

 

The bachelor programme Creative Technology is taught in English and is an interdisciplinary program, in which the latest smart technology and interactive media for developing solutions that will contribute to a better future for people and society are taught. Throughout the many hands‐on projects, students gain technical knowledge and skills, as well as the ability to understand how media and technology influence humans, design and creative processes. Using extensive knowledge of computer science and electrical engineering, students learn to cover the entire creation process: from identifying the core question, to building a working prototype and testing it on users.

 

Research in the context of Pervasive Systems:

 

Pervasive Systems are systems composed of a network of collaborative sensing, computational, and reasoning components that are highly embedded in and actively – yet unobtrusively – interact with the environment. Embedding millions of networked smart sensing objects into an environment creates a digital skin which senses its immediate space. These massively distributed networks of smart objects communicate with one another and analyse and interpret the immense amount of low‐level spatio‐temporal information about the physical objects and environment to produce a representation of the overall environment.

 

Impact: Situated at the core of the Internet of Things and distributed AI, the group's research has high societal and economic impacts in various applications in the area of Smart Urban, Smart Life, and Smart Industry such as environmental monitoring, ecology, ambient assisted living, agriculture, transport and mobility, factory of future, supply chain management, health, sports, asset management, predictive maintenance, and smart cities. System‐oriented research approach of the group is inspired by real problems, which makes multi‐disciplinary collaboration natural.

 

Profile:

 

The focus of your research will be on distributed processing and AI, with special emphasis on edge computing and pervasive computing. As such a thorough understanding of co‐existence of wireless communication and computing as well as hardware limitation and systems design is desirable.
Your teaching duties are mainly, but not solely, in the Creative Technology programme. You will apply your knowledge and (practical) skills initially in a first year introductory module on smart technology. There, students learn to design and build a smart environment. As module coordinator you are responsible for a multidisciplinary team of teachers from electrical engineering, mathematics, computer science and industrial design. You are expected to take part in other teaching duties as well, both from the Computer Science and Creative Technology programmes.

You hold a PhD degree in Computer Science
You have a strong interest in operating at crossroads of different disciplines and a multi‐disciplinary context
You have a passion for teaching and the ambition to become a creative technology teacher
You are capable of high‐quality research
You have the ability and ambition to acquire external research funding
You have excellent communication skill and are a team player
You have, or are willing to acquire, a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or equivalent;
You are fluent in English.

A structural position, starting with a temporary appointment with the prospect of a permanent position after a positive evaluation;
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO), and include:
a starting salary from € 3.637 (scale 11) to € 5656 (scale 12) gross per month, based on relevant work experience;
a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
a minimum of 29 leave days in case of fulltime employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A fulltime employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.
