Full Professor of Theoretical Physics (Chair)


at pay grade W3 (minimum salary per month: 7217 euros) to commence on 1 April 2021. This is a permanent civil service position.


We are looking for an internationally outstanding scholar who represents theoretical physics in the field of classical condensed matter in both research and teaching. An innovative and sustainable research approach with reference to the dynamics of soft matter and fluids is expected. Possible research concentrations include systems far away from thermodynamic equilibrium, active matter and the modelling or simulation of complex or biological systems.


With regard to teaching, the subject area of theoretical physics features in its full breadth in the bachelor's, master's and teacher education programmes in physics. An active role in the university focus areas and elite study programmes relating to physics to strengthen and complement existing activities, as well as involvement in collaborative research alliances is expressly desired. The willingness and ability to acquire external funding must be evident. The ability to teach in English is expected.


In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered.  Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants. Exceptions are possible in urgent cases.
