The Department of Computer Science at the University of California at Davis invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, with a start date in Fall 2020. We seek candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service. We will consider candidates at all academic ranks, including recent PhDs.


We are interested in hiring a candidate in any areas of machine learning, but exceptional candidates in other areas may be considered.


UC Davis is one of the top public universities in the nation, bringing in over $700 million annually in research funding. It includes a medical school, a law school, a school of management and the leading veterinary school in the country. The Department of Computer Science, part of the College of Engineering, has 39 faculty members and about 300 graduate students. Seven new faculty members in the last few years help create a vibrant and dynamic research environment.


Interdisciplinary research is fostered the UC Davis graduate group structure, which brings together faculty from different colleges and departments with related research interests and allows them to co-supervise students. Our location makes it easy to collaborate with industry in the San Francisco Bay Area, and with the State Government in Sacramento.


UC Davis has a strong track record of contributions to social mobility, with 44% of our undergraduates being first generation students. We anticipate becoming a designated Hispanic Serving Institution in the near future. The campus commitment to sustainability leads the nation, with the goal of carbon neutrality by 2025.


Davis is a vibrant college town with excellent public schools and a Mediterranean climate, known for its many bicyclists. Our location provides ample opportunities for urban recreation in Sacramento and the Bay Area. Outdoor opportunities nearby include the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Napa Valley wine region, Lake Tahoe and the Pacific Ocean.


Applicants at the Assistant level should have received, or are about to receive, a doctoral degree in Computer Science or a related field. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in research and a commitment to quality teaching. Applicants at the Associate or Full level should have a strong record of publications and research funding, consistent with their rank, and national recognition. Successful applicants will be expected to establish a top-quality research program and to teach both graduate and undergraduate courses.


We particularly value candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for disadvantaged students.
