Information and communication technology have become ubiquitous. Sensors and mobile devices are everywhere. This internet of things has become an integral part of our life and its growth will continue.  The omnipresent mutual interaction between people, information technology, and the environments in which they live, work, and play, generates deep scientific challenges.

Are you interested in addressing these challenges? The University of Amsterdam's Informatics Institute (IvI) is seeking a candidate at the full professor level to create and lead a new research group in human factors in the context of the internet of things.

You are expected to make significant contributions in world-class research and top-quality academic teaching, as well as effective contributions to management and organization of the research group and the Informatics Institute.

You are expected to:

  • develop and grow new research group in the area of human factors;
  • perform research and publish in high level venues;
  • lead our teaching in the area of human factors and human computer interaction within the institute, including supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students;
  • have a vision on the teaching and research strategy, also outside the department of Human Factors, and take responsibility for managerial tasks;
  • be active in the attraction of external funding;
  • be active in valorisation: transfer your research into collaborations with industry and startups and reach out to the media;
  • be proactive in establishing collaborations within the department, other  institutes and/or companies by contributing your expertise to (joint) research projects especially as it relates to the internet of things.

What do we require?

You have:

  • a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field;
  • proven ability to engage in cutting-edge research in human factors;
  • demonstrated to be creative and inspiring with excellent managerial qualities and leadership capabilities;
  • the capability to initiate and organize new research by identifying innovative research themes;
  • a demonstrated dedication to teaching and educational leadership at the undergraduate and graduate levels (preferably with a certificate of academic teaching quality);
  • enthusiasm about and the willingness to be active in the attraction of external funding;
  • contacts necessary to initiate national and international partnerships and being part of an international network;
  • experience in valorization of research;
  • commitment to stimulating and supervising PhD research;
  • willingness and ability to perform administrative, organizational and managerial tasks.

Our offer

An employment contract for 38 hours a week, preferably starting on 15 January 2021.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €5,749 to €8,371 (scale H2) gross per month, based on a full-time contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

About the Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 7,000, as well as 1,600 members of staff working in education, research or support services. Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works, be it elementary particles, the birth of the universe, the functioning of the brain, or the convergence of an algorithm.

The mission of the Informatics Institute is to perform curiosity-driven and use-inspired fundamental research in Computer Science. The main research themes are Artificial Intelligence, Computational Science and Systems and Network Engineering. Our research involves complex information systems at large, with a focus on collaborative, data driven, computational and intelligent systems, all with a strong interactive component.
