Description

The College of Creative Studies (CCS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers to teach undergraduate courses in Mathematics during the 2020-2021 academic year. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from quarter to quarter, depending on the needs of the College and the availability of funding. Temporary appointment positions are variable in terms of percentage of time (33% to 100%) and may range from one quarter to one year, with the possibility of reappointment being dependent upon program needs and teaching performance. This is a non-tenure track, non-ladder, non-academic senate position. Ideally, one lecturer will be appointed to the position to teach in both Fall and Winter Quarters at 33%. For a fall quarter appointment, the service period will begin September 27, 2020; for a winter quarter appointment, the service period will begin January 4, 2021; and for a spring quarter appointment the service period will begin March 29, 2021. Salary is based on UC’s salary scales and depends upon qualifications.

Responsibilities include teaching a range of proof-based courses to gifted students in the College of Creative Studies. Administrative duties may be assigned depending on department needs and could include advising undergraduates, and reading applications for admission into the college.

At a minimum, applicants are expected to have completed all requirements for a Masters Degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics except thesis (or equivalent) at the time of application. Applicants also must have a minimum of 1 year of mathematics teaching experience at the college level (Teaching Assistant experience is counted) by the time of application. Applicants must have completed a Masters Degree in Mathematics by the start date. Preferred qualifications are: a PhD in Mathematics, teaching experience in teaching proof-based material, applicants with broad training in mathematics, and strong interpersonal skills.

The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.

CCS (www.ccs.ucsb.edu) is a small undergraduate college designed for self-directed students in the sciences and humanities within a world-class research university. It provides a rigorous, accelerated program facilitating original work, and offers a BS in mathematics. We encourage applications from those who have the ability and motivation to engage talented undergraduate students across various sub-disciplines of mathematics.

To apply, please submit a completed application through our web-based system: https://recruit.ap.ucsb.edu/JPF01769. In order to be considered, applicants must submit all required application materials and fulfill letter of recommendation requirements (see next paragraph).

Completed applications consist of a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, and sample of your writing. The applicant must also solicit 2-3 letters of recommendation via the application system (link above). In addition, a statement of research, and/or teaching evaluations (if available) may be submitted.

To receive primary consideration for the 2020-2021 academic year, all required application materials must be received by the first review date: May 15, 2020. The posting will remain open until October 31, 2020, or until department needs are fulfilled, whichever comes first. If you would like to continue to be considered after that date, and the position is advertised again, you will need to submit a new application.

Please note: The use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists at the time you are applying. See the review date specified in UC Recruit to learn whether the department is currently reviewing applications for an upcoming opening. If there is no future review date specified, your application may not be considered at this time.

Due to the short timeline for appointment for this position, candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
