WINDMILL Early Stage Researcher 6: Predictive Machine Learning for multiuser beamforming in massive MIMO

Aalborg University is seeking to hire an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) to join the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network on “Integrating Wireless Communication ENgineering and MachIne Learning”.(WindMill). More details are included

The ESR will be enrolled in the PhD programme at Aalborg University. The supervision team includes: Prof. Elisabeth de Carvalho, Prof. Petar Popovski and Prof. Cedomir Stefanovic. The objectives of the PhD project are: (1) Develop machine learning approaches to build feature maps of the radio environment using antenna arrays of very large dimension (large intelligent surfaces) or distributed antenna arrays, (2) Develop methodology to extract features to be exploited for different use cases (high data rate, low latency, IoT), (3) Devise low complexity multi-user beamforming techniques for very large arrays based on radio maps and machine learning approaches.

Eligibility Requirements

All candidates must meet the following requirements to be considered for this post:

  1. Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) shall at the time of recruitment by the host organisation be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would formally entitle him or her to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited.
  2. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status (under the 1951 Geneva Convention and the 1967 Protocol) are not taken into account.

Candidate Profile:

  1. An undergraduate degree and Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
  2. Strong background in wireless communications and/or machine learning. Strong mathematical skills.
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as presentation skills.
  4. Highly proficient English language skills.
  5. Excellent organisational skills, creative, innovative, independent thinker.
  6. Motivation to collaborate in an interdisciplinary international team.
  7. Motivation to participate in training programs.
  8. Ability to travel and work in and outside Europe.
  9. Compliance with the ITN eligibility requirements (please check carefully below).

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation. 

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
