PhD fellow in Theoretical Machine Learning

 

Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Theoretical Machine Learning commencing 01.10.2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

 

Description of the scientific environment


The student will work in the Machine Learning Theory group of Associate Professor Yevgeny Seldin https://sites.google.com/site/yevgenyseldin/ The group is part of the Machine Learning section https://di.ku.dk/english/research/machine-learning/ and SCIENCE AI Center https://ai.ku.dk/ .

 

Project description

The project, titled “Theoretical Foundations of Learning with Worst-Case and Easy Data”, will focus on development and analysis of online learning algorithms that can successfully operate over ranges of online learning environments. Examples of such algorithms include algorithms for stochastic and adversarial bandits https://arxiv.org/pdf/1807.07623 and algorithms for adaptation to easy data in prediction with limited advice https://arxiv.org/pdf/1807.00636.

 

Principal supervisor is Associate Professor Yevgeny Seldin, seldin@di.ku.dk.

 

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project

  • Attend PhD courses

  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis

  • Teach and disseminate your research

  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad

  • Work for the department


Formal requirements

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields. Applicants should have good communication skills in English. Additionally, the following qualifications are required:

  • Strong mathematical background

  • Good background in machine learning and probability theory

  • Deep interest in challenging theoretical problems in the fields of online machine learning / machine learning / probability theory

 

The following qualifications are an advantage:

  • Background in online machine learning

  • Publication record at the top machine learning journals and/or conferences

  • Relevant industrial experience


Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 325.625 (approx. €43,400) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 44,980). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee and the interview committee.

 

The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills.
