Phd Position in "Knowledge Representation in Practice"
KU Leuven Sint-Katelijne-Waver Computer Science Technology TC, De Nayer (Sint-Katelijne-Waver) Campus

The EAVISE research group is a multidisciplinary research group that performs, among others, research on industrial applications of Artificial Intelligence technology. The group has a tight collaboration with the DTAI research group, that is situated at the Heverlee Campus of KU Leuven. The proposed research will be conducted within EAVISE but may require frequent interaction with researchers from DTAI as well. The research will be carried out on KU Leuven Campus De Nayer in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. This campus is situated a few kilometers to the north of the city of Mechelen, a small but vibrant city in the center of Flanders, lying half-way between Brussels and Antwerp, two of Belgium's largest cities. Campus De Nayer is easily reachable by train (there is a station at 200m, with trains every half hour to both Antwerp and Mechelen/Brussels) and car (the E19 highway is 10 minutes away). In addition, the campus is also easily reachable by bicycle, since the "bicycle highway" from Mechelen to Antwerp runs by the campus: cycling from Mechelen takes about 20 minutes.

A doctor diagnosing a patient or an engineer designing a machine --- challenging jobs often require logical reasoning based on complex domain knowledge. The central question of our research is how a computer system can support such task. In particular, we address questions such as:
  • How can be represent the required domain knowledge in a readable and modular way?
  • Can we co-create such representations together with domain experts and how should this be done?
  • Which support can we provide based on this knowledge and what would benefit the users the most?
To answer these questions, we use methods from Knowledge Representation and Computational Logic. However, the focus of our research is not the technology by itself, but rather how it can be used in practical situations to provide a concrete added value for our users.
Within this general framework, you will work on a doctorate about a concrete research question, that you will define together with your promotor. As part of our research team, you will not only collaborate with other academics, but also with our industrial partners and eventual end users. This ensures that your research will address real problems and that your results will be used in practice.

  • You have (or are about to obtain) a master's degree in computer science, informatics, electronics-ICT, engineering science, engineering technology, or similar.
  • You are fluent in English.
  • Knowledge of logic-based Artificial Intelligence or Knowledge Representation technology is a bonus.

We offer:

  • Full-time employment as a doctoral student starting October 1st 2019 for a period of one year with renewal after positive evaluation.
  • A competitive salary, according to the official standards.
  • A stimulating scientific working environment, within one of Europe's leading research universities.
