PhD Position in Logic-Based AI for the Design of Machine Components
Catholic University of Leuven
Belgium

The "DTAI @ Campus De Nayer" group performs research on industrial applications of Artificial Intelligence technology. It consists of about 10 researchers and is part of the larger DTAI group (https://dtai.cs.kuleuven.be, mainly located in Leuven) and the EAVISE group (http://www.eavise.be, a multidisciplinary research group located entirely on Campus De Nayer). KU Leuven Campus De Nayer is located in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, a few kilometers to the north of the city of Mechelen. Campus De Nayer is easily reachable by train (there is a station at 200m, with trains every half hour to both Antwerp and Mechelen/Brussels) and car (the E19 highway is 10 minutes away). In addition, the campus is also easily reachable by bicycle, since the "bicycle highway" from Mechelen to Antwerp runs by the campus: cycling from Mechelen takes about 20 minutes.

Project

In Logic-Based AI, we use the domain knowledge of human experts to develop smart systems. We help the expert write down her knowledge in a logic language and then apply various forms of logical inference to it, in order to produce helpful conclusions. Using this methodology, we recently developed a prototype of a Logic-Based AI system to help engineers at one of our partner companies design certain kinds of machine components (see: https://lirias.kuleuven.be/retrieve/523033).

We are now looking for a PhD student to further extend this prototype. In this position, you will:
  • Collaborate closely with engineers from the company to develop a usable prototype
  • Research new forms of logical inference to make use of their expert knowledge
  • Research novel ways of representing and updating the expert knowledge

If you like clear and logical thinking, building software systems that work, and learning about technology, this may be the position for you.

Profile

  • You have (or are about to obtain) a master's degree in computer science, informatics, electronics-ICT, engineering science, engineering technology, or similar.
  • You are fluent in English. Knowledge of Dutch is also helpful.
  • Knowledge of Logic-Based Artificial Intelligence or Knowledge Representation technology is a bonus.

Offer

We offer a position as PhD researcher within one of Europe's leading research universities. You will work on Campus De Nayer of KU Leuven, a campus of about 800 students and 100 teaching staff / researchers, located near the city of Mechelen. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with an enthusiastic team of AI researchers, and to benefit from our network of industrial contacts.

The offer is initially for a one year period, but this will be extended subject to a positive evaluation. You will be expected to finish your PhD in 4 years.
