3 Years PhD Student Position in Mathematics Within the framework of a BeLEARN funded project the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bern invites applications for a 3 Years PhD Student Position in Mathematics The successful candidate will pursue research and publications on selected topics within the mathematics of machine learning. Topics and research plan will be developed by the candidate and the supervisors together. Further, interdisciplinary and applied contributions to the BeLEARN project Learning Analytics and Adaptive Learning are central parts of the position. Together with the research group of Prof. Dr. Stefan Troche at the Institute for Psychology, solutions for early performance feedback and predictions based on extended data acquisition from large undergraduate courses are developed. In particular, the candidate will contribute to the algorithmic and machine learning aspects. Tasks Research and publication on selected topics of mathematics for machine learning (candidate and supervisors develop research plan) Evaluation and improvement of machine learning algorithms applied to existing and new data from the BeLEARN project Implementation of learning analytics and adaptive learning in selected large scale mathematics courses on undergraduate level Teaching and support at the Mathematical Institute (10%) Requirements Master degree in Mathematics (if in neighbouring subject, with strong mathematical background) Interest in the mathematics of machine learning and interdisciplinary applications Fluent German and English Team-oriented work style Experience with data processing is an asset Experience with Python and other programming languages is an asset We offer Salary according to cantonal regulations (about 55 kCHF per year) Starting date 2022-07-01 or upon agreement Three years (one year extension possible) Possibility of research accompanying continuing education (CAS/DAS/MAS) Academic, responsive and cooperative working atmosphere Office locations next to the Bern central railway station.
