PhD Position in Numerical Methods for Quasicrystals
University of Twente Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

Job description

The challenge

The group Mathematics of Computational Science has a vacancy for a Ph.D. student to work on a breakthrough development in the numerical simulation of photonic crystals. The objective of the project is to develop novel numerical methods for solving large eigenvalue problems for 3D Maxwell’s equations to understand the optical properties of finite-size photonic crystals. Taking carefully into account the geometry of the considered photonic crystals, we will work on improved, size-independent approximations that, for the first time, allow the simulation of large, realistic crystals.

This project is part of a larger research programme, in which you will closely cooperate with several academic partners with a strong international reputation from the MESA+ research institute and the Debye Institute in Utrecht. An active exchange with the academic partners is a major objective in this project. The focal point of the research is numerical analysis and method development. We offer full access to state-of-the-art computer resources.

Type of work: 40% method development, 30% numerical analysis, 20% efficient implementation, 10% educational tasks.

Your profile

  • We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and curiosity-driven researcher (D/F/M).
  • You have, or will shortly acquire, a M.Sc. degree in the field of applied mathematics or a closely related study program.
  • Excellent mathematical and very good programming skills are a prerequisite.
  • You have good team spirit and like to work in an internationally oriented environment where many cultures meet.
  • You are proficient in English.
