Applications are invited for the position of Chair, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science. Applicants must be tenured faculty members at Western. A record of high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision, and research in Mathematics is required, as well as some administrative experience. The successful candidate will have a clear vision for the direction of the Department, demonstrated leadership ability, and excellent communication skills.

The Chair will consult with the Dean on departmental budgetary requirements and administer the departmental budget. The successful candidate will be energetic, creative, and able to recognize, take, and create opportunities. The Chair will develop and implement a strategy for mentoring, developing, and supporting departmental Faculty and Staff across career stages. The Department of Mathematics is a strong component, with the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Statistical & Actuarial Sciences, of Western’s School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences.

Consequently, the successful candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships both within Science and across the Western Community, as well as in the Canadian Mathematics community. The Chair will be expected to develop and facilitate the implementation of a departmental academic, research and administrative plan, and be part of the team who will help develop and implement a new academic, research, and administrative plan for the School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences

. Furthermore, the Chair will be a part of the Faculty of Science leadership team and as such, will help develop a new academic plan for the Faculty of Science. These plans must be consistent with one another, as well as with the strategic plans of the University, and will aim to position the Department within the top tier of Canadian Mathematics Departments.
