Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campuses are located in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland. We are now looking for a Postdoc or Ph.D. student in the area of interledger DLT technologies Are you a DLT (blockchain) expert, with a security and semantics background, with an urge to work with completely new technologies that are likely to have wide societal impact? We are now looking for a postdoc or Ph.D. student to conduct research in the context of the forthcoming EU H2020 project PHOENIX, which involves shielding the grid against complex incidents and extensive cyber and privacy attacks. In addition to conducting research (and studies towards the Ph.D.,) the selected candidate will also act as the task leader for two tasks within the project, collaborating closely with a number of project partners over the Europe. With the introduction of distributed ledger technologies (DLTs, aka blockchains), it has become possible to create new fully decentralised governance models. When implementing such new governance models, especially for systems that involve IoT, the questions of data sovereignty, semantic interoperability, and federation become crucial. In this research, these will be considered in a dynamic and distributed setting involving multiple interconnected blockchains, i.e., in an interledger technology setting. The research will also involve implementation of the needed software components, requiring strong software development skills. Your role and goals 1. Acting as the task leader for two tasks within the EU project: data sovereignty and semantic interoperability, and federated cloud/inter-ledger transactions platform. 2. Collaborating closely with a number of the 25 project partner organisations, all over the Europe. The research will mainly take place in prof. (PoP) Pekka Nikander's group, at the Department of Communications and Networking, with collaboration with other researchers in the Network Security and Trust group in the department, and with prof. Matti Lehtonen's group at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation. In the EU project PHOENIX, there will be altogether 25 organisations, but only two universities: Aalto and RWTH Aachen. In Pekka's group there are currently one postdoc and four Ph.D. students, with quite diverse backgrounds of software architecture, security, business design, and mathematics. The less than two years old group is among the very few academic research groups that are both able to implement practical DLT based systems and to study their societal implications. Your experience and ambitions Due to the regulations set by the PHOENIX project, the prospective candidate must be a citizen of a European Union country and eligible for receiving a security clearance.
