School of Mathematics and Physics

The School of Mathematics and Physics is a School within the Faculty of Science at the University of Queensland. The Discipline of Mathematics is located in the School of Mathematics and Physics. It is the leading provider of tertiary mathematics education in Queensland. Undergraduate programs offered are BMath, BSc, BA (each with an Honours year) and BAdvSci; Coursework degrees (MSc, MFinMath, MDataSc) and research degrees (MPhil and PhD) are offered at postgraduate level.


The Discipline is internationally recognised for its research excellence and hosts a number of first class research centres. Research is carried out at the cutting edge across a broad spectrum of areas in Mathematics and Statistics.


The position is based at the St. Lucia campus of The University of Queensland, one of the most spacious and attractive university campuses in Australia. The campus is centrally located near major public transport routes.

Our Ideal Candidate

We look for a highly motivated and strong candidate to work with us on exciting theoretical and algorithmic challenges related to Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes, and its applications in fishery management. The candidate should have completed or is nearing the completion of a relevant PhD degree, with evidence of contribution to high-quality research. Specific requirements are included in the Position Description document. In particular, the following knowledge and skills will be valuable

  • Background in mathematical modelling of animal populations.
  • Understanding of (Partially Observable) Markov Decision Processes.
  • Familiarity with the theory and implementation of Monte Carlo techniques.
  • Knowledge of one or more standard machine learning platforms, such as Scikit-learn, PyTorch, and Tensorflow.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time fixed term position at Research Academic Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $69,342 - $92,782, plus super of up to 17%.

Our Selection Process

Short-listed applicants will be invited to an online interview. The interview will start with a 10 minutes presentation by the candidate, which will be an introduction of the candidate and the candidate’s current research interests. This will be followed by 20 minutes of questions based on around your research and the project.
