About the role:

The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (CRUK MI) has access to state of the art genomics, proteomics and imaging technology, which are together being used to advance our understanding of cancer. Our aim is to gain a greater understanding of the fundamental basis of how cancer develops and apply that knowledge to develop new diagnostic tests, potential treatments and better ways to predict the outcomes. Genomics technologies are central to this work, and analysis of the data generated by these technologies is reliant on substantial amounts of computing. Among others this is achieved on site through the use of a dedicated HPC facility housed in a machine room on site.

We are seeking an experienced Principal Software Architect to join our dynamic Scientific Computing Team. You will develop and implement bioinformatics analysis pipelines for personalised medicine based on the Snakemake workflow management system to support the analysis of large volumes of deep sequencing and other types of data. Pipelines will run on a 1'500 core HPC Linux cluster that resides in a dedicated data centre. The Scientific Computing Team provides a stimulating and motivating work environment, you will be encouraged and supported to keep track in this field.

About you:

You will have a PhD in Computer Science or Bioinformatics (or related discipline) or a relevant postgraduate degree in a related field plus significant relevant experience. You will also have a considerable depth of specialist programming knowledge, experience and skills, a familiarity with workflow development and data management and strong communication skills. You will also have experience with working in HPC environments and batch systems in particular. This role is an exciting opportunity to join a highly interdisciplinary team that combines biology with computer science, mathematics and software engineering, whose goal is to help understanding the cancer genome.

Although an understanding of cancer genomics and cell biology would be advantageous, it is not a prerequisite.
