PROFESSOR IN TIME CRITICAL REACTIVE SOFTWARE

KU Leuven has a full-time academic vacancy in the e-Media Research Lab at the group T campus in Leuven. We are looking for internationally orientated candidates with both educational competence and an excellent research track record within Computer Science, and with extensive expertise in the field of time critical reactive software. The e-Media Research Lab is an intense collaboration between the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Computer Science. Both departments are part of the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven. The successful applicant will be appointed in the Department of Computer Sciences, Faculty of Engineering Technology. The e-Media Research Lab investigates, develops and implements novel techniques and systems to enhance the human condition with ‘embodied media’. These systems contain sensors that capture input from a human user or information from the environment, algorithms that analyze these data, and intelligent systems with actuators that generate meaningful output. Central to our research questions is how humans will perceive this output, and how they respond to it. Often we implement fully interactive systems that are fun and engaging, and at the same time serve a serious purpose. Our human-centered systems are applied in the domains of health care, learning, arts and entertainment. As a true multi-disciplinary research lab, e-Media combines the complementary expertise of computer scientists, electronics engineers and social scientists, such as digital signal processing, machine learning, software engineering and user experience design (https://iiw.kuleuven.be/onderzoek/emedia). The teaching activities are situated in the Faculty of Engineering Technology, which has developed a unique multi-campus model spread over seven campuses in Flanders. For this vacancy, both education and research activities are mainly linked to Group T Campus, Leuven.

Duties

Research

Digitalization, internet-of-things, industry 4.0, etc. are driving forces for almost all industrial and social players towards adjusting and renewing their processes and infrastructure. The wide-spread availability of inexpensive and reliable sensors offers the industry excellent opportunities to monitor processes and health parameters, to make software products more efficient, safe, reliable and flexible, and to offer new services or products. The abundance of sensor-generated data already creates added value, but once such systems are treated as distributed platforms that combine sensor data from different sources, the real power is revealed. More and more, these distributed platforms shift toward cloud and/or fog computing. The vast availability of sensor data also creates new expectations that include time-critical software aspects. However, current cloud and/or fog computing solutions are only in the early stages in terms of time-critical guarantees. Additionally, users expect that platforms remain operational under all circumstances, and that platforms deal with errors or even failing components ('resilience') and remain highly responsive ('responsiveness'). These criteria apply in countless application domains and to all kinds of companies and organizations, from small to large. Therefore, special attention needs to be paid to the design and implementation of concrete prototypes for software components with time-critical and reactive characteristics. This requires thorough knowledge of time critical and reactive software systems, targeting distributed applications in the cloud, real-time software systems (from OS to application layer) and real-time internet communication technologies. In the aforementioned context, you develop a research programme at an international level, on time critical reactive software. You collaborate with other research groups at KU Leuven and other universities. You work together closely with the members of the e-Media Research Lab. You develop a network, both within the academic and non-academic world, to strengthen the collaboration between both, among others for the valorisation of scientific results. You are able to acquire competitive funding, which includes project-based government funding as well as industrial funding. You develop strategies for commercialization of the applied research results on behalf of government and industry in applied research. You provide additional expertise to the research group, thereby strengthening the fundamental research, and you identify topics within existing research programmes that are relevant for your own work, thereby providing a fundamental basis for your own research. You also give the necessary attention to ensuring societal impact of scientific results.

Education

You provide high-quality education at Group T Campus, in the Faculty of Engineering Technology, in computer science. You teach bachelor subjects in Software Development, Data Science, and Data Communication, and master subjects focusing on Distributed Systems. You clearly commit yourself to the quality of the programme as a whole. You are enthusiastic about project-based, hands-on and interactive means of teaching. You contribute to the pedagogical project of the faculty and university by guiding student projects (for example bachelor’s and master’s theses), and supervising PhD students. You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven’s views on activating and researched-based education, and make use of the possibilities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.Your teaching duties are limited in the first years of your appointment. All professors are expected to teach a few basic undergraduate courses. In your further career, the faculty will also pay a great deal of attention to the balance between research and teaching time.

Service

You are prepared to provide services to the scientific community, to society and to the university in function of the needs and your personal interests. You play an active part in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Technology to new students and the wider professional field by participating in open days, networking events and fairs,...

Profile

  • You hold a PhD degree in a subject that relates to the research field.

  • You have a strong applied research track record in the discipline, evidenced by your publications or by your research experience in industry. You have a strong ambition to contribute to the commercialization of scientific results on behalf of society and industry. International experience is an important advantage.

  • You have verifiable qualities related to academic education. The ability to immediately take on a wide range of educational tasks is an advantage.

  • You possess organisational skills and are a team-player. You also possess leadership competencies in a university or industry context.

  • The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of your employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.

  • Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch resp. English to the required standard.
