Mathematics Education

Subject area description

Within Mathematics Education the processes, conditions and outcomes of teaching and learning are studied in relation to mathematics. The mathematics content can be a clearly defined teaching area, a school subject, or a university subject, but it can also be a part of transdisciplinary or thematic field. Mathematics as a content is always present in varying degrees but the emphasis is on the educational aspects.

Job assignments

The position is primarily focused on research and teaching within Mathematics Education. For the first two years, half of your time will be to work with a research assignment that has been given additional resources, where significant part is continued development of one of the department’s three research environments and with initiating and leading Mathematic Education research and expanding externally financed research.

Mathematics Education research at the department has a practice-based classroom focus, such as communication in the classroom, learning among students and teachers and content analyses of study resources and their function. Research is also conducted on teaching mathematics and on ICT, Learning studies and interaction studies. The knowledge interest includes all levels of the educational system, from preschool to teacher training and research conducted in the department’s three research environments. There is also an interfaculty collaboration among different research groups at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology, and in the Mathematics Education Research Gothenburg (MERGOT) network.

Teaching and supervision assignments include undergraduate, master’s and graduate levels. The department offers two master’s programmes (120 credits), one in didactics and one in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Teacher training dominates the undergraduate level. The applicant is expected to contribute within the field of Mathematics Education but also work with core educational science and in-school training.

The professor will have a central role in building up and developing the field of Mathematics Education, which also includes outreach to the surrounding society.

Eligibility for employment is defined in Chapter 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and Gothenburg University’s appointments procedure.

Employment as a professor requires that the applicant has demonstrated both scientific and teaching expertise.

After an overall assessment of the applicants’ scientific and educational skills, the applicant deemed to have the best potential to carry out the position’s assignments will be chosen. Equal emphasis is given to educational skills as to scientific expertise within Mathematics Education.

Scientific expertise is demonstrated through documented experience of planning, initiating, leading and developing research and of the competitive ability to acquire and add to previously received research funding. The breadth, depth, originality and productivity of the applicant’s own research is judged, as is the applicant’s contribution to and assignments in the academic field.

Educational expertise is demonstrated through the documented ability to develop, lead and implement high quality education, successfully supervise students and produce qualified educational materials.

Emphasis is given to the applicant’s academic leadership and experience of and ability to lead research. Leadership skills are demonstrated through the ability to lead research activities and to motivate and create the conditions required to achieve common goals. The ability to coordinate and to create interest, involvement, inclusion and joy in work are examples of the skills we are looking for. Academic leadership includes administrative skills demonstrated through the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work appropriately for the purpose, to manage resources and to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of strategies, goals and quality.

As a significant part of the department’s teaching assignment is within teacher training, we would like to see applicants that have a teaching degree and experience in working with questions related to learning, teaching and education in and about mathematics in primary, lower-secondary or upper-secondary school. The ability to teach in Swedish is a necessity for the position, as most instruction is given in Swedish. Applicants who cannot teach in Swedish are expected to be able to do so within three years of taking the position. A good ability to cooperate and a positive attitude toward students and colleagues are highly valued.

Other information

The selection process might involve trial lectures, interviews and contacting references. In interviews, applicants are given the opportunity to describe and expand on their own view of teaching and research in the subject and of their coming role at the department.
