Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance. We are looking for a Research Assistant/Associate to work on the project "Opening Up Minds: Engaging Dialogue Generated From Argument Maps", a 2-year EPSRC collaborative project with the Open University (lead organisation), University of Sheffield and Toshiba Research Europe, starting in January 2021. The successful candidate will be based in the Natural Language and Information Processing group (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/nl/) at the Department of Computer Science and Technology and supervised by Dr. Andreas Vlachos. The aim is to design a dialogue system interface to existing databases of arguments surrounding controversial topics such as Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union? or Should all humans be vegan?. The work package led by Cambridge will focus on the development of machine learning-based multi-party argumentative dialogue agents to engage the users into conversations with multiple agents exposing them to the arguments in a persuasive manner. Candidates will have completed a Ph.D. (or be close to completing it) in a relevant field such as NLP, Information Retrieval, Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning and be able to demonstrate a strong track record of independent research and high-quality publications. Essential skills include excellent programming (Python), NLP techniques, Machine Learning, and proven communication skills. Appointment at Research Associate is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD (in which case appointment will initially be made at Research Assistant and amended to Research Associate when the PhD is awarded).
