Professorship for Soft Machines University of Freiburg Department of Microsystems Engineering
The University of Freiburg has been granted 19 Tenure-Track Professorships from the Tenure-Track Programme and now invites applications in the context of this programme for the Tenure-Track Professorship for Soft Machines at the Faculty of Engineering in the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK)
DescriptionThis is a grade W1-professorship to which performance payments can be offered. This professorship is suitable for highly qualified early career researchers at an early stage in their careers. Conditions governing the appointment in accordance with section 51 (3) LHG apply. The appointment of the tenure-track professorship requires the eligibility of the appointed person in the Joint Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Programme for Junior Academics (https://www.tenuretrack.de). The appointment has to adhere to the requirements and deadlines of the Tenure-Track Programme. The professorship will be established within the framework of the federal and state program (BundLänder-Programm) for young scientists. It is an accompanying measure in the environment of the Cluster of Excellence "Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems" (livMatS). It will strengthen the cluster in this field and also be fundamentally supported by the cluster. The professorship represents research and teaching in the field of Soft Machines made of soft, deformable materials such as gels, elastomers / liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) and responsive materials. An important aspect will be the system integration of very different components into functional complex systems. The research results should be particularly relevant to at least one of the fields of energy-autonomous microsystems, intelligent systems and intelligent materials, surfaces and processes. In the Cluster of Excellence, a link between the research areas A (Energy Autonomy), B (Adaptivity), C (Longevity) and the demonstrator area should be strengthened. The professorship is to form an important interface between the fields of material science, electrical engineering and soft robotics. In addition, the professorship is to bring together competencies by networking with research groups in the livMatS cluster of excellence, the Faculty of Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, the Material Research Centers (FIT, FMF) and non-university research institutions in order to promote fundamental and application-oriented research in the field of soft machines. Prerequisites for the position are a completed PhD degree in a relevant field, an outstanding dissertation, demonstrated pedagogical skills and an excellent publication record. The position will initially be limited to four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it will be extended by two years. Furthermore, the tenure procedure towards Full Professorship W3 will be initiated after successful interim evaluation. The tenure procedure is regulated in the statutes and quality assurance concept for junior professorships and tenure-track professorships and has been agreed with the Ministry of Science (https://www.zuv.uni-freiburg.de/service/tenure). Prerequisite for the granting of tenure and the subsequent transfer to a W3 professorship is (1.) the fulfilment of the requirements according to the statutes and quality assurance concept and (2.) the fulfilment of the subject-specific criteria defined by the Faculty for Engineering. We particularly welcome applications from women for the position advertised here. The following application documents are requested:
