Research Assistant/Associate in Monte Carlo Radiation Transport and Reactor Analysis University of Cambridge Mathematical Theory of Radiation Transport

We are looking for an adventurous and talented researcher to fill a postdoctoral position as part of the recently awarded £7.3M EPSRC programme grant, MaThRad (Mathematical Theory of Radiation Transport). This five-year interdisciplinary programme of research will use modern mathematical methods from probability theory, advanced Monte Carlo methods and inverse problems to develop novel approaches to the theory and application of radiation transport.

Radiation transport lies at the heart of how we design, regulate and operate some of the most important technologies for the 21st Century. These include:

  • building new reactors (fission and fusion) and, de-commissioning old ones
  • medical radiation therapy
  • establishing novel space technologies

MaThRad will pursue an interactive exploration of foundational, translational and application-driven research; developing predictive mathematical models with quantifiable accuracy and software prototypes, ready for real-world implementation in the energy, health care and space exploration nuclear industries. This programme grant presents a unique opportunity for postdoctoral researchers breaking scientific and mathematical boundaries.

This position includes the possibility to undertake an academic or industrial placement with one of our 26 partners. Among others, partners include, but are not restricted to: MIT, Tsinghua University, EPFL, Jacobs, NHS trusts including UCLH, NASA, CEA, EDF Energy, Rolls Royce, CCFE.

The successful candidate must have or be close to obtaining a PhD in Physics or Nuclear Engineering, preferably in the fields of Reactor Physics and Radiation Transport Modelling Methods. They should have a strong mathematical foundation in Monte Carlo methods, proven ability of their application, demonstrated software development skills and an ability to work in a team. Applicants with a related background should provide evidence of their versatility.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £27,116-£31,406, Research Associate: £33,309-£40,927

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 42 months in the first instance.
