We are a leading EEE department in the UK, focussed on attracting diverse and ambitious applicants who, through inclusive, passionate, innovative, research-led and industry-supported teaching, graduate as highly sought-after engineers and leaders of the future. Our EEE Department is part of the Faculty of Engineering, one of five faculties at the University of Nottingham, itself one of the 24 UK Russell Group research-intensive universities.

Following a comprehensive review of our course portfolio and resultant growth, we are pleased to announce that we have a number of vacancies available for new full-time staff at Assistant Professor level. Successful applicants will join our leading EEE department and work alongside a team of around fifty academic staff, who are conducting world-class research and responsible for educating just over 700 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Further information about our department and faculty can be found online at www.nottingham.ac.uk/eee and www.nottingham.ac.uk/engineering, respectively.

We are seeking ambitious candidates who have the passion to pursue an independent research career and aspire to be internationally leading in their field of expertise are who are also committed to teaching and delivering a high-quality student experience.

You will be able to clearly demonstrate both practical experience and knowledge across a breadth of electrical and electronic engineering topics and will have the ability to teach a range of our modules offered to 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students. You will also be able to contribute to the development and delivery of advanced (final year undergraduate and MSc) technical modules, aligned with your expertise.

You should demonstrate the potential to undertake original research with a clear alignment with one of the following Faculty of Engineering research groups:

  • Power Electronics, Machines and Control Research Group

www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/pemc

  • Optics and Photonics Research Group

www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/optics-and-photonics-research-group

  • George Green Institute for Electromagnetics Research

www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/ggiemr

Whilst all applications aligning to these groups are welcome, they are particularly sought in the following areas of research expertise:

  • Electrical machine drive applications (machine control, position sensorless control, electro-mechanical powertrain design/integration)
  • Power electronic converters for power system applications (micro-grids, stand alone or utility grid connected converters)
  • Power electronics – reliability and design (device integration, power semiconductor modules, topologies, high voltage insulation systems)
  • Electrical machines – reliability and design (topologies, cryogenics, high voltage insulation systems and/or dielectric/winding reliability)
  • Biomedical optics and sensing and clinical applications of optics
  • Nano and meta optics, plasmonics/photonics, manipulation and nanosensing
  • Novel microscopy, imaging techniques and applications including laser ultrasonics
  • Computational optics and machine learning in optics
  • Computational electromagnetics for lightning applications (electromagnetic models with emphasis on multi-physics and multiscale), microwave applications (large-scale microwave in-situ problems) or photonic applications (passive/active devices, photonic BG structures and optimisation methods)
  • Computational/experimental techniques for EMC/microwave applications (antenna measurements, measurement methods for anechoic chamber, GTEM cell, RF measurements for EMC)

As part of the role, you will apply for, and strongly support colleagues applying for, external funding to enable the development of new and original research.

You will have a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a closely related subject area along with post-doctoral research experience and publications aligned to a relevant area, as described above. Excellent communication and organisational skills are also essential.

These roles are available on a permanent, full time (36.25 hour) basis. Job share arrangements may be considered.

The University of Nottingham is committed to providing competitive employment packages whilst supporting the wellbeing of our staff to help them reach their full potential. You will have access to the resources of the university as well as a range of benefits and rewards, including staff discounts and travel schemes and an attractive pension scheme.

To nurture your talent, you will be assigned mentors to guide you in both your teaching and research activities and you will have access to a wide range of short courses, offered by our Professional Development team, which can be used to develop your skills and help you reach your personal and professional career goals. Early career academic appointments will have access to an early career academic fund and an initial PhD studentship.
