The Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Algebraic Geometry.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in mathematics. You will work in the group of Ignacio Barros.
  • You will be part of a collaboration between the University of Antwerp and Bielefeld University in Germany and as such you will be based in Antwerp but expected to spend at least six months (not necessarily consecutive) in Bielefeld working in the group of Charles Vial.
  • You will carry out mathematical research in the context a research project entitled "Hyper-Kähler varieties and moduli spaces" financed by the Research Department of the University of Antwerp and the German Science Fundation. You can find more information here.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the department.

Profile

  • You hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in pure mathematics or a related field by the time you start your appointment.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • A working proficiency in English is necessary, however knowledge of Dutch or German is not required.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
  • The earliest possible start date is 1st of October 2023. The start date of the position is flexible but not later than 1st of June 2024.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at campus Middelheim in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
