Assistant/Associate Professor of Mathematics University of Cambridge

Applications are invited for an Assistant/Associate Professorship in Climate and Environmental Fluid Dynamics, jointly held in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Department of Earth Sciences (DES) to commence on 1 January 2024 or shortly thereafter. Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent and be able to demonstrate an outstanding research track record within the broad area of Climate and Environmental Science. Applications are particularly encouraged from those in geophysical, climate and environmental fluid dynamics that significantly exploits the unique facilities of the GK Batchelor laboratory in DAMTP, and which complements and extends pre-existing strengths across Climate and Environmental Sciences at the University and at the British Antarctic Survey. An ability to teach in both the Mathematical Tripos and the Natural Sciences Tripos is essential. Experience in encouraging and supporting applicants and students from groups underrepresented in STEM subjects, including women will be an advantage.

This is one of two faculty positions in support of a new MPhil in Quantitative Climate and Environmental Sciences jointly developed by DAMTP and DES in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey.

Applicants will be expected to give undergraduate and masters-level lectures, in particular contributing to the new MPhil in Quantitative Climate and Environmental Sciences. Applicants will also take feedback from students and provide career and perform other usual departmental duties such as those associated with examinations. They will be expected to investigate new areas of research, seek out new funding opportunities and submit grant applications. They will also be required to write papers for publication, attend conferences, network with national/international colleagues and give presentations.

Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Assistant or Associate Professors. Appointment as an Assistant Professor will normally be for a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retiring age thereafter, subject to satisfactory performance.
