Assistant Professor of Mathematics Stockholm University

Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Stockholm

Ref. No. SU FV-3228-23

at the Department of Mathematics. Closing date: 8 November 2023.

The position is associated with the Wallenberg Initiative on Nerworks and Quantum Information (WINQ) hosted by Nordita (Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics) in Stockholm. Nordita was founded in 1957 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was relocated to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm in January 2007 where it is jointly hosted by Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Research at Nordita covers a wide range of modern theoretical physics including astrophysics, biological physics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, cosmology and astroparticle physics, quantum information, high-energy physics, and statistical physics/complex systems. WINQ is part of an ambitious, wide-ranging strategic initiative in frontier information technologies funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). WINQ aims, over the next few years, to nurture research activities centered around theory of quantum information and complex networks. The assistant professor is expected to lead a research group and contribute to an active and creative research environment at the mathematics department at SU and to the activities within the WINQ initiative at Nordita. Workplaces will be provided at both institutions. Teaching duties include supervision of Master’s theses as well as basic courses in mathematics and more specialized courses within the subject field on both Master and PhD levels.  With its long tradition of excellent research, the Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University has a prominent place in Scandinavian mathematics. The department consists of three departments: mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational mathematics. Researchers working at the Department of Mathematics have skills that span many different branches of mathematics, from algebra, geometry and analysis to mathematical logic, mathematical statistics and computational mathematics.

Subject
Mathematics with focus on mathematical analysis on graphs with applications

Subject description
The subject covers mathematical analysis on graphs with emphasis on differential operators, harmonic analysis on metric graphs and spectral geometry and on applications in random graphs, convex and discrete geometry, Fourier analysis, analysis on fractals and inverse problems.

Main responsibilities
Research and in addition some teaching and supervision.

Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for the position as assistant professor, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree or equivalent in a mathematical subject. In the first instance, an applicant should be considered who has received such a degree no more than five years before the deadline for applications. However, an applicant who has received such a degree earlier may be considered under special circumstances.

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

For this position, the assistant professor is employed until further notice, but no longer than six years. The contract may be extended to a maximum of eight years under special circumstances, such as due to sick leave or parental leave.

An assistant professor may, on application, be promoted to a permanent position as associate professor. Specific criteria for promotion from assistant professor to associate professor have been established by the Faculty of Science.

An application for promotion to associate professor should be submitted to the faculty at least nine months before the appointment as assistant professor expires.
