Postdoctoral Fellow in Computer Science Australian National University, College of Engineering and Computer Science

Classification: Academic Level A / B (4 positions)
Salary package: $66,318 - $84,122 (A) / $91,541 - $104,254 (B)
Terms: 2 year fixed term contract

  • Join a prestigious research group and participate in world-leading research in the concentrating solar thermal field
  • Develop novel technologies to ensure solar thermal is competitive with other renewable and traditional energy sources
  • Participate in basic technology research, technology demonstration, and system-level analyses, and work closely with industry partners for solar thermal technology deployment

Position overview

The ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) is one of the premier engineering and computer science research institutions in the world.  Comprising the Research School of Computer Science and the Research School of Engineering, both are recognised as research leaders in their respective areas continuing the tradition of excellence in research and research-led education.  The Solar Thermal Group (STG), part of the Research School of Engineering, has a 40 year history of experimentally-driven work in the field of solar thermal energy, with around 30 research staff and students.  The group maintains the 500 m2 Big Dish as a full-scale experimental CSP facility, and has recently commissioned a new solar thermochemistry laboratory including a 45 kWe high-flux solar simulator.  STG conducts research and education in the broad area of solar thermal energy conversion and related basic and applied disciplines. The main applied research themes are concentrating solar technologies for power generation and production of fuels and commodity materials, solar heating and cooling, and system integration. The basic research spans across optics, photonics, radiative transfer, thermal sciences, chemistry, and materials science.

These four research-intensive positions are primarily in the concentrating solar thermal field, with focus on different aspects including development of low-cost heliostats and high-performance solar receivers (sodium receivers and boilers, bladed receivers), and system modelling of  entire concentrating solar thermal plants.  The positions contribute to research within a number of ANU-led projects.  The projects are funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Research Agency (ARENA), the Australian Research Council (ARC), and via a Collaborative Research Agreement with industry partner, Vast Solar. The positions are defined by the objectives of the projects, but depending on the capabilities and experience of applicants there is flexibility to vary the mix of classification and role.  Applicants are to apply for one of the positions listed below, but are encouraged to describe their capabilities across the other positions if applicable.

  • Position 1: mechanical / optical engineer, with experience in ray optics, programming ability in common languages (e.g. Python, C, C++) and aptitude for practical and experimental work
  • Position 2: mechanical / thermal engineer, with strong experimental experience, heat transfer and thermo-mechanical modelling ability (e.g. computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis), and aptitude for experimental data analysis & interpretation
  • Position 3: process / mechanical / systems engineer, with strong numerical modelling background such as chemical process modelling, energy systems modelling, system dynamics and control, with strong interest in numerical methods, thermodynamics/heat transfer and applied renewable energy systems design.
  • Position 4: mechanical engineer, with experience in product design, development, prototyping and testing
